Bonaparte in Italy 1796: Mondovi
« on: February 09, 2018, 05:44:55 PM »
In the previous week (Dego), the French got in between the Austrians and Sardinians. Now they turn on the poor Sardinians to drive them out of the war. Victory for them in this scenario is really a case of holding out longer.

And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

Super report. Great to get two whole games in in an evening!

Hi Vincent,

This is a very interesting take on how to play the 1796/97 battles. I put together spreadsheets trying to figure out the OB's for the battles, but the circumstances surrounding the battles are so key to what actually arrived.

I finally gave in and ordered a copy of BBB, and will probably playtest it versus F&F with something like First Bull Run. However, I'll keep Napoleonics in mind, as I mean to return to the period this year. I also noted that people are talking about using them for Zulus? I only have 4-5000 10mm Zulus, but I could probably manage a game. ;)

Cheers,

Christopher

Hi Chris. My choice for the best training game is the Montebello scenario in the files of the Yahoo group. It is small and tightly balanced. We play 2 or 3 games per evening, about an hour each. It might take 90 minutes or so while learning the rules. It also is light on the terrain. A lot of BBB scenarios involve lots of hills, towns, streams, etc.

Bull Run is good too but takes more like 2 hours to play. You had some input to that scenario design.

Let me start by saying that I'm not generally a fan of this sort of "one base = one brigade" type games, but these are very well done.

Glad you like them, Baron! In fact BBB is not normally "one base = one brigade", and even in these stripped-down operational-level games the brigade units are composed of 3 or 4 stands which get removed as casualties. For these higher-scale scenarios, though, I dispensed with formation changes, so the stands just become strength points.

The unit stands are on magnetic sabot bases. Each unit has three or four stands. When the units get down to 2 stands we take them off the sabots.

And here's the mat for the next scenario, Lodi.

Thank you for this which I found very interesting.

I will wander over to BBB and have a peek.

Cheers,

Paul
