WIP 15mm Mean Streets — Gangster Terrain Board
« on: March 16, 2018, 11:26:28 PM »
Project’s been in the works for a while... 15/18mm Blue Moon 1920s Gangsters (and Police, and G-Men... and Hillbillies!) in a miniature Chicago setting, using three “systems” to support a number of types of games.

What I want is three modular and independently-playable boards: a 2’x3’ neighborhood encircling a park, a 2’x2’ intersection with a prominent church, and a 2’x3’ seedy riverside docks street (concept below):

(More info on the systems, the build, the minis, and glamor shots of the concept soon on the blog... will link when available.) Ran into some snags on the board design... see this thread...

And it’ll be IN MONOCHROME! Black and white, just like the classics (mostly)!

Looking for inspiration: any others with similar projects already in progress or (e-gads!) finished? Monochrome minis and terrain, 4’x6’ 15mm urban board? And having never been to Chicago, what is essential to the look of classic Chicago?

Very ambitious project, it will be great to see it progress. There are likely to be a lot of buildings over those three boards, are you looking to make them yourself?

Cool!

I'm working on a pulp/sci-fi crossover, based on 300x300mm tiles. I've been inspired by

Here's a picture of my sci-fi buildings on the tiles (each building is based on 98x98mm or a variant thereof)

My first pulp-style building base (98x198mm).

My second scratchbuilt building, although the pulpyness is a bit ruined by the alien text.

My latest build, three buildings with a corner shop and some apartments.

Featherstone,

Things to consider for your Chicago layout... CG had/has a lot of side and back alleys even downtown in The Loop, smaller theaters and corner brick banks near downtown and in many neighborhoods. Like most large cities, it is rather tight, so that is something you'll want to represent.

Lakeside docks were/are not really a downtown feature although there were docks along the CG river. There is always Navy Pier to model since it was built in 1916, named Municipal Pier, and renamed in 1927 as Navy Pier. Navy Pier allows for adjacent beaches and some lakefront terrain as part of your project... a great place for a chase to end in a shootout.

Best of luck with this interesting project.

Best,
Bill

Looking forward to seeing this develop.  :D

I have some 15mm modern stuff but not in a condition to show yet.
