I know .45 Adventure and Rugged Adventures. What other rules do you know (and which one do you actually use) that can be used to play some pulp or lovecraftian adventures? And which ruleset needs a gamemaster and which one is more like a usual wargame?

"Uh, I better look in the manual... This book must be out of date. I don't see "Prussia", "Siam" or "autogyro"...

Having played both, I can tell you that Rugged Adventures is much more of a traditional minis game, but my preference is for .45 Adventures. I have to admit that I am not an unbiased observer, since I'm writing a new game based on .45 Adventures*. Both games have an excellent pulp feel (with a decided edge going to .45 Adventures, I think). There's a battle report here on an adapted .45 Adventures game used for a Cthulhu game, so you can see it works pretty well. Neither system has anything built into it for the lovecraftian genre.

Both games do better with a GM to control random events, and in .45 Adventures random events and encounter markers are crucial to the success of the game.

*The game I'm writing is a swashbuckling version, called Gloire.

Of course I'm partial to .45 Adventure...  :D

However, the other rule sets out there are Astounding Tales (version 2 due any day now) from The Virtual Armchair General and Chaos in Cairo from Westwind. Both could also handle the Lovecraftian element.

Another thought is Savage Worlds

http://www.peginc.com

It's a cross between a RPG and a Skirmish game. It's primary focus is Pulp (any kind of pulp, pulp sci-fi, gothic pulp, pulp western, pulp horror, or classic 1920's pulp).

I havent been there for a while.

I play mainly .45 Ad cuz I like the game, the rules and I know a bunch of people who are born for Pulp  :)

I also like to play Voyages Extraordinaire and sure my own Adventure gaming Rules.

Maybe I will show you some extraction here some day. Dont know yet...

Hard to beat Savage Worlds and Two-Hour Wargames for small scale shoot-outs.

It's Astoundng Tales, .45 Adventures, and Larger Than Life for me in no particular order/ranking. Each set has its own advantages and disadvantages and I'll choose a set for a game based on how I feel that particular day.

I'm interested to try the recently released Where Heroes Dare! from Iron Ivan Games.

All great games listed above.  If you would like to see more of the Where Heroes Dare! system, I have a blog set up here:

http://doctormerkury.blogspot.com/

We have used the set for small stories of 3 players per side or for larger stories with casts of up to 30 per player in just about any environment.  It's point based too which allows players to make up their own forces for a bring and play.

Hope that helps!

I used to play a lot of Astounding Tales...  but there is no support.  >:(
But they keep saying its comming...right... ::)

So I went to .45 Adventure and Larger Than Life.
But Where Heroes Dare looks intriguing...
