Spanish Tercio, Alférez [TYW]

Hello!

I present you my first miniature of my new proyect: Spanish Tercio (no end date  ). I'm using ECW Warlord miniatures, but I'll paint all pikeman with Italian and Spanish Morrion and muskets with brimmed hat, any with montero caps!. Opinions, suggestions, etc are welcome!.

No really, fantastic paintjob. Love the soft colors, techniques used and overall look. The colors are fantastic and work well. What paints do you use?

I dont know it!, I've read Tercios de España by Fernando Martinez and El ejercito español en la guerra de los 30 años by Pablo Martin Gomez, very very good both, but in spanish :S!. I scored this book for future purchases , thanks for the info!

What paints do you use?

All from Vallejo and citadel foundation: base color --> ligths

Red: Flat brown --> Flat red
Yellow: Tausept ochre --> ++white

Boots: Beige brown --> ++white
Coleto: Burnt umber --> British uniform
Gloves: Charadon granite --> ++white

Lovely. He certainly looks Spanish!

I find the Warlord ECW officer figures slightly strange looking. Kind of stiff and bulky. But you've made a beautiful job of this one. One of the best paint jobs I've seen on the Warlord ECW figures so far.

Thanks thanks thanks . The "capotillo" = coleto I think. I've read the red colors is very important in spanish troops: red is Castilla color. My idea is paint the muskets with brown colors, "dark style", with some piece in red or yellow!.

how do you get the depth of colour and neatness do you black line afterwards?

just brilliant I could look at it for hours.

Here are two special requests (and I think I’m not the only one interested)… please show us more of them as they come along and tell us how do you achieve this kind of quality when painting your figures?

Well...I will try explain it, but is hard with my little english! (I will need use a translator.. )

I start with white primer: to achieve more vivid colors. After, I profile with black (60% water + 40% black) ALL parts and pieces, to separate them clearly and facilitate the subsequent painting. If you quit, don't worry, isn't the final paint. Example:



To continue, is need contemplate the miniature colors:

-If we want paint red color, we cant start with flat red and light with orange or pink (isn't natural!!!), we need use a dark color, like flat brown or red brown, and light with flat red.
-Paint yellow: idem!. We can't start with flat yellow (Also, this color is too liiight: phosforite). I decided use a ochre color (Tausept ochre, by Citadel Foundation) like base color and light with +white.
-Etc

In my blog i've several articles about paint red, blue, yellow and white...but are in spanish (but with pictures!):  3 articles in "Nivel basico":

Then, I start to paint clothes. First I apply the base color watery (1/2 water + 1/2 color), to avoid lumps. I need apply several layers to get a uniform color. After, I apply the lights (add white or other color, depends on the base; for example: yellow --> yellow + white; dark brown -->  light brown; green --> green + yellow; etc). This light will be watery too (although will need apply several layers). With watery layers we get degraded easily. I apply 5-6 lights, increasingly fine. Example:



After, I use the base color, or other color more dark, and review the shadows. So,  get more contrast!.

And finally, I perfile again with black, to review the correct separation between clothes or pieces.
