I'm a huge proponent of well printed mats, however...I am with some of the guys above in that I don't want printed "items" on the mats, unless it's something akin to cobblestones, etc.
The second I see bushes or trees, or big things like bones, skeletons, etc...I'm not considering the mat. It kills the versatility. I own three mats currently (owned a couple others before), and the one which gets the most use is the most versatile one a simple "Steppe" pattern with grass, pebbles, etc. The other two mats are more specialized.
I, like many hobbyists, would love to have the time/space/storage for beautiful proper 3D textured gaming surfaces, but the reality is I don't. I do try to bring a lot of 3D terrain into my games, and my results are normally pretty solid.
