I also have the Tankograd Key Flight '89 book somewhere.

[Edit] It only has 24 Airmobile and (opfor) 20 Armoured summaries. Nice photographs though.

Saracens and Saladins, classic post war British military vehicles, so I thought I'd add 'em to my BAOR lads.... oh, dear!  :'(
The old Airfix ones have about six bits and look like shapeless lumps with six wheels sprouting out. That won't do at all for my lads, so I thought of these...

Three Saracens and two Saladins later I was all set. Yesterday morning construction began, by tea time half a Saracen was completed. My hands were cut to ribbons, I was seeing double, and stiff old knees were sore from crawling about getting the carpet monster to regurgitate bits of mi' tank back!
I've been at this game for over half a century and flatter myself that I'm somewhat competent at it. Sadly not, these little bleeders have driven me to the edge of madness... and defeat!
Demoralised I put all the bits and bobs away and cancelled the project, for ever.  ::)
Over a morale building five pints of Tetleys I realised that the potential for opening up hatches, adding figures, stowage, camo nets and wotnot was too vast to ignore... today, battle re-commences!!!

:o

I think the Airfix kits come out ok, saying that I bought mine when they were still JB models.
The Ace kits are impossible to put together I bought a load of their French kits and gave them away.

Too right, they're absolute bastards to build! The minuscule fine detail bits break in half as you cut them from the sprue. The bits you can actually see, without an NCIS magnifying light, ping off to all points of the compass with great malice aforethought.
Having said that I've just finished a Saracen... and love it!

Many years ago, I was still at school (yes it was that long ago),
I wanted some 1/76th WW2 German side-cars. Bought some Hassagewa kits,
big mistake.  The front fork assembly alone was 12 parts!!!!!
Move the clock on some years & along came Brittania Miniatures (now under the
ownership of Grubby Tanks) One casting for the motorcycle (with rider) and one
casting for the side-car (with passenger). Assembly involved two solid lugs going into two reasonable sized holes. Job is a good one!

ACE kits can be an absolute b@stard, but if you manage to beat them into submission then they do look rather nice. Keep fighting, don't let them get the better of you. Take a deep breath and do not loose ones sense of humour.

Could you not just buy a real one and look at it from a long way away?

I bought a huge pile of Ace kits at a model show in Prague. I was really excited at seeing all these wonderful modern kits naively not realising what bastards they are. The trader just patted me on the shoulder and have me a look that said what have you got yourself into.

Right, today's the day 'Harry's Chieftains' get their baptism of fire! We're doing two scenarios from 'One Hour Wargames', a bridge found unguarded and crossed by a patrol and a straight battle for two river crossings for the second.
BAOR have two Chieftains, a FV 432, three Infantry stands plus Harry's personal HQ. Ivan's got some sort of very ugly tank, a wop off giant APC, four scabby looking Infantry stands and equally scruffy looking HQ... I'm impartial, so no clue will be given as to where my true loyalties lie.
We let the HQ unit attach themselves to a badly shaken unit and rally off a D6 of hits, HQ then sticks with 'em to victory or death!

:)
