Pulp Sci-Fi Space Patrol "Space Cops"
« on: May 18, 2009, 11:46:48 AM »

My main figure project for the last couple of months has been pulp sci-fi figures.  I hope to use them in game systems such as Fantastic Worlds, Chaos on Cronos and any other system that requires a small amount of rockets and rayguns type figures.  My Little Green Men are a sub section of this project.

Another subset of the project is a group of "Space Cops" the S.P.D.  Main influences are the Green Lantern Corp and Jedi.  Not so much their powers but the idea of a lot of different species in their own outfits with a unifying colour scheme.

The figures come from all over which has made them that much more fun to paint IMO.

As I paint up alien factions for gaming I plan to paint up an SPD version of each (for example, I have some cat men and some rock men on my painting table currently.  One of each of those will get painted up as SPD while the rest get their own scheme).

As is always the case with my painting these days the figures are base coated, each colour gets one quick highlight and then dipped.  It gives ok to good results but importantly it gives me high turnover.

Any comments or criticisms are very welcome!

Very nice, cheetor.  I love the final effect you're getting on these pulp uniforms :)

You might try looking at the Lensman stories by E.E. "Doc" Smith (Triplanetary, First Lensman, Galactic Patrol Grey Lensman, Second Stage Lensman and Children of the Lens) for additional inspiration. Your figures are well done, I especially like Dr Mel,(the Quentin Quantum figure.) where did you find it. If you live in New York, I definitely want to play in this game.

Sounds interesting. I will keep an eye out for them, thanks!

Im afraid that I live across the Atlantic in the rural south of Ireland in a house surrounded by fields: pretty far from NY in a lot of respects Im afraid.  Thanks for the encouragement though :)

Its a Heroclix called "Jewel".  I added an old GW laspistol and an old plasma pistol serves as a rocket pack (out of shot).

Brilliant stuff, the names are just as good as the painting (funny names are important to me, it stops me taking myself too seriously).  8)

I find naming my geek stuff quite difficult usually.  In this case I sat down on the patio with my wife on a sunny evening with a bottle of wine and brainstormed.  She normally has a "Thats nice dear" attitude to my toy soldiers but this time naming them even counted as quality time.

Result ;)

Im glad that you like them.

Sara Kingdom in BTD's Doctor Who range might fit in very nicely... she was a Space Security Agent, blue overall and all...

That is an awesome collection. Well executed, all the figs work together, really top notch. And you did a green Dr. Simian. Cool!

Very nice indeed, I love your use of Warzone fiigs and the Dark Eldar, very convincing and alien/pulpy like. I'm not too fond of the dipped look but I think a matte varnish could help. Other than that the painting looks good. Thanks for sharing!
