Finally a bit of an update on the great heathen project of '24. I had intended to batch paint these in small groups like I did my greek hoplites earlier this year, but building and collecting got the better of me and the first batch ended up 25 figures large. Mostly Victrix unarmoured Saxons, with some Viking and Goth heads, reinforced by a trio of shieldmaidens (two from Stronghold, one Bad Squiddo). Then a couple of heroes, a personal champion made from Gripping Beast's Saxon Banner bearer. I've named him Gregor, also seen here posing next to Ragnar Lothbrok. Then a pair of shieldmaid leaders, one Stronghold again, the other Footsore. Finally Footsore's Saxon warlord, who I got before really deciding on which figures to use to lead this warband. I fear he will be a shelf warmer more than anything.

Thank you! Not sure if I mentioned it before, but beyond bark for the rocks, twigs, tufts and some 3d printed details the basing for these uses a mix of flock blends: Kodama Woods from Krautcover, Pine Forest Floor from Geek Gaming and some leaf scatter from Green Stuff World.

Great addition, i like how you use potentially rather strong colors like red and blue and tone them down so it doesn't look like a Dark Age Circus :)

Thanks everyone, glad you enjoy following this project. This update may seem a little silly after all the heroes I just finished painting, but as I started painting the plastic warlord (pics a couple pages back) I felt more and more unhappy with the build. The scale armour body is nice but the pose is a little wonky and the head with face mask looks a little uncanny valley. I ended up building a new iteration using my favourite head from the Victrix armoured late romans. A bit of greenstuff fur to give him a bit of a stronger profile as well.

He looks suitably menacing! And I like the fur coat you have added to his shoulders.

Fantastic. He looks perfect. I love this recent project, the little mushrooms on the bases are a great touch.

Well, my dear mushroom enthusiasts, I have another update for you. Finished the plastic heroes, not much more to say there. Testing a different backdrop.
