Arkham Horror: The Card Game, a review
«

I've recently been playing Arkham Horror: The Card Game, by FFG. It's a neat card game that feels like an RPG without having to invest a lot of time in creating characters and scenarios. I'm really enjoying the narrative of the campaign helped with the usual excellent FFG production values. If you're interested in knowing how it plays, I have written a review on my blog, it can be found here:

Let me know what you think!

For my money it is the best game FFG have made for Cthulhu, great solo and even better three plus! Easily my fav card game too!
I can't wait for Innsmouth and Mountains of Madness

Yeah, it has tons of atmosphere and is genuinely difficult, which takes me back to playing CoC RPG, where most of our investigators were either dead or mad by the end of a scenario...

Many thanks for the useful review.
As it is just me and the Mrs at home I have been looking for a game that we can either play together or I can play solo and I do like the CoC world.
I've played the Mansions of Madness app driven game which is good and a lot of fun but not one for me to buy and own.
May pick this up as a seasonal gift to myself.

No problem, I am glad it was of some use. I have played the game considerably more than when I wrote this post, and it still stands up as an excellent game. We played a three player scenario a little while ago and that was also a lot of fun!

Excellent, it's a great game and only gets better with each play IMO. Let me know how you get on with it.

Excellent write up.
I have had an interest in Cthulhu for many years.
This game looks like just the thing to play solo,
or with a few friends.
Just the thing for Christmas.
Thanks for the post.

Thank you, I am glad you find it useful. It's a really good game and i have played it solo plenty of times. I would advise using two characters though as one is really hard!

Playing solo running 3 characters is the sweet spot for me. Truly a great game. Huge numbers of hard timing decisions to make, twice as many as with only 2 characters. Great flavor.

Would it be playable with minis, or is that just silly?

I've played it now with two other players and that was a lot of fun, but solo, I've only used two characters. I am going to start the Paths to Carcosa campaign soon, so I may try three.
I'm not sure how much you would add by using minis, unless, you converted the cards into terrain pieces and miniatures of the monsters/NPCs/PCs, but all it would do is make it 3D. You'd still be using the cards for the stats, etc. I think if you were going to use minis then just get Mansions of Madness, which is practically this, but with minis!

You could use mini's instead of the standees. I guess you'd get the mini's from Mansions of Madness.
With several different CoC games, including Elder Sign, I wish FFG put out a comprehensive set of investigator figures that would be a superset of their CoC games. With MoM and the "failure" of the painted AH miniatures, I doubt that will happen.
