Attempt at sculpting
« on: May 22, 2009, 07:11:53 AM »
1st attempt did not go well. 2nd attempt present, was an attempt at making some kind of super hero character. I think it is okay for someone with no experience, plus I saw how bad my first try was.  What do you think?

Not too bad for a second try, though what have you modeled it out of?

You obviously have the control to be able to make some great figures. You have got well defines lines and shapes. What you lack is knowledge of anatomy(dont we all eh?). SO yes, study some people! I suggest copying pictures of people to learn how the muscles work and lenghts of propoetions etc.

Lord Ramshackle knows his onions, so I can't improve on what he said. Great start and your figures can only get better  :D

I've just started learning to scuplt too. I'm now on my 5th figure and there's quick improvement. I found investing in a couple of dollies from Hasslefree help me get started. Then having a picture of what i'm trying to achieve helps too, often this has been some photo that I've pulled from t'internet. There must be some pretty good scupltors around here (and not just you Ramshackle) that must be able to give some good tutorials in techniques, what I'd love is a tutorial on making weapons, especially rifles and pistols and how to get good sharp edges.

Here is my 3rd attempt to make a super hero. Not good but better than the last attempt.  Still can not figure out how to do a face.

If you haven't already, have a look at some anatomy books. They may give you an idea of proportion, which I think is what is missing from, say, the first figure.

The second one is a lot better.

I'm sure you'll get the hang of it! I'll be keen to see your progress, as I've been thinking of having a go at this miniature sculpting business too!

Hey thats a big jump from the former piece - keep at it!
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way

Thought I'd something more to say

There's a decent tutorial on how to make faces on Matakishi's website, try checking that out, its been a big help for me, though at the moment I'm using hasslefree heads while I get used to scuplting, then I'll try faces.

I monkied a bit in gimp with the image.

I made the head thinner, the legs bigger, trimmed the feet a bit and added the muscles to the side of the torse. Not much different from what you have, but makes it look a bit more real.

I also changed the chest muscles. Basically, the body is a machine, each muscle does a specific task and is connected to another set of muscles. SO basically, on yours the chest muscles arent moving anything, they are just there for show. On the image I did I connected them to the arms....

Hey keep it up! Your already way ahead of me, I fixed a miscast thumb on a Foundry Cowboy the other day & I felt like Michelangelo lol.
I am looking for the following Deadlands minis:  Shotgun Thug, Lost Soul, Cleaners, Railroad Workers & Feral Dead. If you have any of these minis, or if you are one, please send me a PM.
