Izhevsk Rifle Division
« on: August 14, 2018, 06:05:46 PM »
Here are the first completed units for my resurrected Russian Civil War project.

These guys are (loosely) based on troops of the Izhevsk Rifle Division that fought under Admiral Kolchak in Siberia and later as part of the Izhevsk-Votkinsk Brigade of the Far Eastern Army. They are probably a bit too 'clean' and rather more 'uniform' than their historical counterparts and their famous blue shoulder boards are a shade too bright, but I wanted something to make them 'pop' on the wargames table - so I hope I can be excused a bit of artistic licence.  :D

Their banner caused me a bit of a headache as after much searching for references I have drawn a blank. I resorted to using a flag based on a Russian Imperial Regimental design. Flags like these were used by White forces in the RCW, which gave me the excuse to use it - and for no other reason than the blue colour matches well with the shoulder boards! If anyone reading here can point me in the direction of a more accurate flag, I'd be grateful for the advice.

They look nice, but I doubt they flew a Nikolai, since the Tsar was no longer around to give them one.

I would suggest this one: https://ro.pinterest.com/pin/515873332293646485/?lp=true

The letters incidentally on the right are IZ, but in handwritten Cyrillic. You can generate them using MSWord using ИЖ and sticking them in italics and trying different fonts until one looks similar.

I sometimes think we get too caught up in making everything look ultra-realistic and "lived-in". These look absolutely fantastic - I'd be honoured to have something as good on my own gaming table.  :-* :-*

Now paint some more.  :D

Here is practically exhaustive information on the Izhevsk division:

http://www.kolchakiya.ru/uniformology/ij_vtk_rebels_02.htm

This part was created from workers' weapons factories in the cities of Votkinsk and Izhevsk. In these cities there was an uprising against the Bolsheviks under the leadership of other socialist parties. No sympathy for the monarchy, they have not experienced.

Here is the banner that they used. Banner of the division:
