How to make TT Combat’ cargo ship more Pulp/Interwars?
« on: August 30, 2018, 04:50:36 PM »
I got the TT ship:

https://ttcombat.com/collections/city-scenics/products/cargo-ship

and foolishly assembled it immediately. Then I realised that really, it’s too modern for what I want🙁.

I’d appreciate suggestions on how to make it more suitable for Interwars/Pulp games bearing in mind, it’s already assembled....!

Any input welcome.

Doug

Perhaps a smoke stack, some air vents, and crane, such as seen in this example:

I agree with joekano, it needs a smoke stack. Also the front of the pilot house should
be vertical not slanted. The roof should be flat not sloped at the rear. Look at the picture
that joekano posted, the cabin and pilot house are basically rectangles. The squared off
superstructure is what gives it the pulp and early to mid 20th century look. Hope these
suggestions are of some use.

Doug,

Not an issue, you can Pulp this in an afternoon. What have you got available to you. (The obvious answer is the useal answer for economy and speed ;))

Ideally you need to raise and length the whole thing. An off cut of wood (plank/board about an inch thick would be ideal. It doesn't have to be the length of the ship as you can use a couple of pieces.)

The superstructure isn't an issue to get hung up about.Ideally you could do to remove the whole front and reposition . Equally it can be disguised if your loathed to cut into it.

You can quite easily achieve a similar look to the layout of this one. It shouldn't take long at all to come up with a plausible hybrid.
( the hull on this one is a little small as its the hull for the Multi look paddle/tramp steamer . I knocked up for my son so its only 26cm long as he only games on a 3x3 board.)
Mark.

That looks like a fun kit to make.  Great call!  I'd like to make one.  I wish there were more deck space behind the superstructure, though.

Could I suggest those air vents that look like a tuba opening?  Remember, they face forward to get fresh air below decks.

Perhaps some deck guns, lamps, and life preservers:

Or maybe a bigger deck gun up front.

Some ideas for crew: https://pulpfigures.com/products/category/12

These are excellent minis.  I have a bunch of them.

Here are some ideas for inspiration.  Obviously a different kind of boat but still, you can see some fittings.

And don't forget the SS Venture for inspiration:

Please show us how it turns out!  I'm excited for this project.

I felt the same way about the kit, easy to build but felt too modern.

I made some minor changes, as seen in pictures below.
The big thing was to increase the height, and length. I used 2" styrofoam to increase the height & length, and a summer condiment basket for the railing on the stern.

Suggestions of stuff I should have done...

I thought about redirecting the stairway towards the stern, then adding a rear compartment and smoke stack behind the cabin. However I ran short on time, so simply stuck the smoke stack on the roof of the bridge.
I also have air intake stacks, but again did not get around to adding them.
I also have, and recently found them again, crane/masts for the fore deck, that would help with a pulp look.

The pictures are shots of my WIP, for a Pulp Alley campaign.

Good luck with your project, look forward to seeing pictures!

Just got back from quiz night at the pub and checked in on this and I’m mightily impressed by the input so far. Thanks everyone for contributing - I’m itching to start on this and I’m looking forward to seeing more ideas.

Great stuff - keep it up, chaps.

Thanks

Doug

I talked to Chris about this at Claymore and his response was that it was researched but he would consider changes if contacted. A nice piece but I also feel that it looks a tad modern.
Cheers,

I have one in my assembly queue.

I would suggest visiting Wilkinson or similar and picking up some map pins as bollards.

A crane would be good, plus various masts etc.

It is worth looking at various model boat sites for details.

For a sea going vessel, you should add a new outer skin with a higher bow. It would also give you the opportunity for a forecastle.

Davits and a small boat.
