I have a load of Essex 25mm Mahdist Ansar figures which I think are jolly nice, and should scale in okay with Perrys, although the Essex may be a bit chunkier. Most of them come with open hands for spears, swords and so on, so should be perfectly possible to equip them with rammers, sponges etc and cast them as gun crew...

A friend pointed these out to me a few days ago;

http://www.brigademodels.co.uk/Frames/GW28/Items/GW28-1107b.html

I'm not so great on French uniforms. Would these work?
Does anyone know how these size up to other ranges?
Thanks

It depends if you are a true "rivet counter", but they are Belgians... and on the big side from what I read.

If you have a few spare Mahdist figures just arm them with rammers & sponges or leave them open handed. There was no uniform for artillerists, just anyone that thought they knew what to do with the big guns.

If you are still looking for French officers, there are two plus an NCO from Foundry's FPW range on EBay:

Reasonably priced, too!

Hello all, I've another question;
Does anyone know how Redoubt's Sudan range scales next to Perry's?

Thanks for all the replies thus far, it's been very useful.

Redoubt are very tall, Perry are quite short. I have some of each company's Fuzzies. If no-one else beats me to it, I'll try and post a couple of pic ofs them together tomorrow night.

I'm happy to use them on the same table (but in separate units) but I know many who wouldn't.

Don't have any Perry's yet. But I do have some Redoubt figures that I have mixed into a unit with Foundry & Old Glory. The Redoubt are a little big but not too bad. I think the mix well. The unit I have is my Chinese Tigermen. I also have a number of Redoubt pirates and they are not as large as the Boxer figures.

Here are some pics of my figures. Don't let the "wargames standard" painting put you off them  ;)

Firstly a group shot with three Redoubt on your left and three Perry to your right:

One of each:

And a pic of them in action at Triples:

The four units on the left are Perry, as are the three mounted Imam, armoured Emir and standard bearer with them. The three units to the right and the two mounted figures with them are Redoubt. The gunners are a mix of Foundry, one Perry and the captured Egyptians' possibly Castaway Arts (but definitely one of the Aussie manufacturers).

Rules used were Rudi Geudens' Afriboria. Great fun and free  :D

Fantastic, thanks. I'm a bit of a nut for 'true scale' 28mms, so I think I'll avoid these.
You've a great setup there; the gun teams have certainly given me a couple of ideas...

Afriboria, eh? The name rings a bell, I'll do a search. I've about six different rulesets, yet still cannot decide on which to use. Another one won't hurt...

Again, thanks for the help.

Further questions;
Would Foundry's FPW French gun team fit in with later colonial troops?
http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/collections/FP/8/index.asp

And what kind of gun would be most suitable for later French colonial forces?

Again again, thanks for any help.

On a different note, I found a Mahdist gun team, buried away in Bicorne’s colonial catalogue, and ordered a couple to see what they're like. Worst. Figures. Ever.
Really.

Dear "a_i_42"  ;)
I'm not a specialist of artillery matters so I really don't know : I just think they are nice figures and highly usable in a "fictiounous" context  :)
By the way, what do you mean by "later" ?

I know you are not too keen on Askary miniatures, but it makes a nice pair of mountain guns : the colonial artillery were often old "recycled" pieces. However, you can't go wrong with a "75 mm" ! I think they are pretty rare in Africa, but it's the perfect French Canon ! Look :

Why don't you ask on the Colonialwars Yahoo group : I'm sure they'll give you very accurate answers.

Really.

I'm very curious to know why : I have always been intrigued by their italians.
