The port town of Oldenheim sits across the junction of several trade routes of the Empire, both by road and by sea. When the invasion from the northlands hit the city it was partly ruined during the siege and then partly occupied by the Chaos forces. But the invaders were held in the eastern edge of the city when the seven bridges over the Tessel were brought down by the last survivors of the City Guard. In trying to bypass the Tessel outside the city, the invaders split force was brought to battle by a combined force of men, dwarfs and elves – Known as the Grand Alliance in memory of a former allied army that had defeated the Orcish army of King F’yarr many years before. Once the force outside had been driven off and routed, the forces of the Alliance began to invest the remaining invaders in the city. After four months of fighting, the entire city of Oldenheim was declared liberated.

Or so they said…

But the scars of ruined and razed buildings are not the only reminders of the short war. Now, a few months after the fighting has ceased, the work begins to reclaim and rebuild the city. But the East Quarter, once the bustling commercial heart of the city and home to both financial and goods trading houses, remains a ruined maze of buildings and strange happenings. With the casualties sustained by the City Guard and Alliance troops in the fighting, the Guildmasters of the city have begun offering high rewards to volunteer warbands who are brave, or some say stupid, enough to enter into the ruins and recover both property and treasure as well as clear out the remaining vestiges of the chaos army that had descended from the north.

But the fragile state of security in the region is cause for concern. Not only do small groups of Chaos followers remain at large within the city ruins, but some from the enemy’s field army sought refuge in the Black Forest which straddles several nearby roads and caravan routes. The forest has always been a place of dread and darkness, and in recent months this has grown ten-fold. The same Guildmasters are now recruiting those warbands to also guard caravans or even venture into the forest to eliminate threats. The bounty paid for the heads of Chaos followers can be lucrative, if a sometimes fatal way of making a living.

But the threats don’t stop there. From Norsca the war also brought an increase in raids from the Norse tribes near to the area. While not all are followers of the Dark Gods, all the Norse see an opportunity for pillage and plunder when it arises. The chaos and confusions has also seen the Goblin tribes of the Black Forest and the Barrow Hills become more confident in raiding and striking at the city itself at times. The lure of treasure, goods and slaves is high for all… even some of the hired warbands are not adverse to do some of their own pillaging and treasure seeking and it has become common place to see fights occur between the hired Guild warbands, with some of these feuds even spreading into the largely undamaged Western Quarter of the city.

To say the war and invasion was over might have sounded like a victory call to those far away in their castles and cities, but to those in Oldenheim the war seemed far from over.

Excerpt from A History of the Lost Cities of the Old World by Franz Stienhager quoting the report of Guildmarshal Klaus von Uberich on the current state of Oldenheim when he visited the city on behalf of the Moneylenders Guild.

Back to Carroburg with three more 80s veterans...

The Carroburg Warband just needs one more champion to be ready to start...

Two more arrivals in Oldenheim...

First up is Maximillian the Brave from the F2 Fighters range in Spring 1987. He will be taking the role of the second champion in the Carroburg Warband and his arrival brings the warband to its starting allocation and is thus complete... For now.

Next we start a new warband using The Moon Duke taken from the 1986 boxed set BC7 - Heroic Fighters of Known World. He will be the Captain of a new warband composed of soldiers drawn from the Deathjacks Regiment who are still serving in the city on clean up duties, though some would say that the mission happily dovetails with the regiments love of looting...

Captain Karl Mond - 2nd Company, The Deathjacks;

What paints do you typically use and is it standard base/wash/highlight?

I use a selection of GW paints, Foundry and Vallejo Model Colour. Inks and washes are solely GW ones with the use of AK and Mig Production enamel filters on some models.

I tend to use a base colour, with a wash and then several highlights following reapplication of the base colour. On occasion I then reshade with inks, as I did with the Moon Duke to accentuate the folds in the cloak which lost a little depth as they were highlighted.

The first champion for the Deathjack warband… Julius – the warbands scout, guide and forager. The old man of the group and with the reputation of being able to source anything required... no matter what.
