Thanks all, remarks are much appreciated.  :)

The changes to the rules are different to those used fir the Chivalrous Rumpus Extraordinaire as Recovery tests for wounds are factored back in and as mentioned Close Combat has a very different mod to that which I tried before. The mod works much better with Galactic Heroes but more testing is required.

In the meantime, more minis are required to play a bigger test game with units, so I’m in the throes of enhancing existing Retinues and adding new ones.

My LAF Gallery is HERE
Minis (foot & mounted) finished in 2024 = 32
(2023 = 151; 2022 = 204; 2021 = 123; 2020 = ???)

Nice scenery & figures. I too would be interested in your modifications.
Vodkafan & myself are eagerly awaiting Galactic Heroes arrival in the UK.
At the same time we plan to buy Fist full of Lead (& the Napoleonic one).

I agree with earlier posts, it is who you play against, not so much the rules.
We always seem to have a good time (our 'group' is a maximum of 7) and we
play a wide variety of rules, but as I get older I do prefer the simpler sets.
Less to remember/ forget.
In a recent game of Rogue Stars the scenario was to steal water on a desert planet.
Half way through the game came the realisation, from one player, that even if he
did get to the purification units (& crack the security codes) he had forgotten to
bring anything to carry water in! Play with the wrong people & there would have been
a massive argument. In our game ...a good laugh.

Thanks H.B  :)

Though I said I didn’t want to get drawn into the merit or otherwise of small games, it seems I can’t help myself  :D

Whether a game is 6, 12, 24, 48, 96 or 182 minis a side is for me somewhat immaterial. The same tactics  generally come into play (eg, charging, blocking, feints, etc), it’s just that lesser or greater resources are used to facilitate and enact them. If a set of rules isn’t fun AND tactical then I’m not massively enthused (fortunately, the FFOL* engine delivers both elements very, very well). As has been astutely observed, the AAR was of a test game, with the major mod to the rules being to close combat. So it’d be true to say that the game was primarily a test of the modifications to close combat. What  better way to test that than a charge into melee with a bit of shooting support from the flanks? With the foregoing  in mind, everything is nothing without the scenario, and creating a scenario that works to make the best of the players (fun), the best of the terrain (pretty & tactical), the best of the minis (pretty & tactical), and the best of the rules (fun and tactics = playability), is for me the objective, and in all that game size is not a driver but a consequence.  ;)

Btw did I say that I’m about to start  working on a castle?  :D

*FFOL is designed to be played by multiple participants with each managing a small number of figures. It excels at what it’s designed for, though I also enjoy playing it solo and aspire to use it for larger games.  ;)

Fantastic write up and great looking game. Am I the only one who imagined the Red Knight looking up at the end and saying "It is only a fleshwound"

At some point I’d quite like to add a few minis from the Studio Miniatures ‘Medieval Mayhem’ range.  :D

I put together a list of knights for 2nd Barons war on my blog

http://stormandconquest.blogspot.com/2015/04/barons-wars-lewes-14th-may-1264-order.html

If you need coat of arms let me know, my wargamers guide book should be published in March 2020 with all coats of arms and known castles linking each lord and retainer.

Cheers
Matt

Interesting list of names there. If you have any details on coats of arms that you would like to share I would be interested. I'm certainly going to be pitting my forces against Silent Invader....

Interesting info on your blog Matt, thanks very much. I’m using made up names and colours for my knights as at present I’m just planning ‘side actions’ rather than recreating the big events but that might change (projects do just seem to grow  :D). In any event your forthcoming  guide sounds both interesting and useful.  8)

Lovely work Steve on the miniatures and the rules idea for this period.

All the best,

Great looking game even if it was only a rules test. As others have said, it's the scenario and your fellow players that make a game for me. Play with the right people and every game is fun! Looking forward to seeing more of this.   :-*
