I'm amazed that the Germans permitted the transfer of the Somua S-35 to Africa or really anywhere out of Europe given that it was one of the best tanks available at the time.
Best in what respect? The commander is still commander, gunner and loader. The radio operator still often has no radio and has to pass some of the shells over his shoulder to the commander, who has to bend to reach them.
I'm not aware that the same modifications to seating carried out by the Germans on the vehicles they seized was ever done to those that remained in French service. Even the vehicle on display at Saumur is a German-modded vehicle handed back, complete with retro-fit cupola hatch.
Good armour, speed and gun, but one man turret and lousy ergonomics.
