Never seen that Blackadder sketch before. Not often the hobby gets any attention like that. Quite an end to those airfix soldiers, but their time was over as you said.
For 1914 apron but no sporran seems right for the type of junior officer to lead the men. Tin shade has a convincing argument that there always were exeptions as a rule. There surely was someone wearing it as well. But as Emir pointed out, it did not really serve a purpose and was rather uncomfortable to wear unless standing/marching.
