OGAM 28mm Maori/Polynesian Project
« on: December 30, 2018, 11:23:17 AM »
A new year is coming , and a new project too. :?

Ok, i know, i didn't need a new one to add to my wish list's Projects  lol lol

But, with the help of agentbalzac and his friend Neil, I decide to rush in this new Project. Neil give me is OGAM list and researches that were very usefull to see where i'm going. He save me a lot of time .

As i'll use some stock from my leads mountain, this army will be a little, if any, original  ;) and cheap.

You won't see any maori warrior figurines in this army because i haven't any in stock, so i 'll use for the warriors, my Foundry Dark Africa as base for the converting work.
Yes, you read it right. African warriors as Maori ones  :-*
With some work of course.
The Gods and the Legends will be mainly provide by Reaper Bones. i have some idea of good figurines in their range to be use for this OGAM Project  ;D

As my first tests are very concluding, i'll drop you some pictures during the WIP.

first test, with tongue out, of course :

Hope you will like them.

cheers
Eric

A worthwhile project and it will be fascinating to watch it unfold. Pacific wars in general (Samoan, Tongan, Solomon Islands and Fiji) is definitely a market all but completely untouched. Keep us posted.

Looking good so far Eric, I am keen to see my OGaM Maori vision enhanced by someone else.

I hope these test figures are Hero's/Legends and not a normal warrior (Toa),Most Maori  would normally carry a short close combat weapon or a long one not both. I think Hero's/Legends can be excused.

Cheers Neil

Not completely untouched Unlucky General as Eureka miniatures have a Maori range under their Tribal banner. Apparently they are also about to re-release the Hawaiians as the sculpts were starting to show their age. http://www.eurekamin.com.au/index.php?cPath=87_126_866&sort=3a

I love the conversions so far Nervisfr, look forward to seeing more.

Thank you guys !

Neil, thank you for your precisions.
I have in mind to create a lightly (visual) difference between Elite and Normal Warrior. May be with the use of 2 weapons for the Elites and  1 weapon for the normal warriors   ;).
You should propose to Ganesha Games to produce your list on their web site , like the Inca, Pre-Islamic Arabian and Japanse ones.

i actually working on Ruaumoko, god of Earthquakes, Volcanoes and seasons...with a little idea for represente him as emerging from earth throught a lava bed.
i'll add him a new trait from the Celtic supplement : Mountain Maker for the combine effect of Earthquakes and volcanoes irruption. :D

The base of this god 'll be from this Reaper stone Giant :

because he get the pose i wanted and he was in my stock at the moment  ;D

Nice work Eric. I have recently got the same figure and am planning to use him for Whiro lord of Darkness.

Good idea for defining the elites and normal warriors.

I will look into the Ganesha Games idea

Cheers Neil

Thank you Neil.

The lava bed is complete and the paint work nearly finished too.

The God is a test about a small electrical handiwork with Leds for the lava bed  ;) to make it more impressive when he surface from earth !

 :P

looking forward to seeing it Eric.

I had modified his stats slightly since I sent you the list by adding Tremble before my might. I have not seen the Celtic supplement. I must try and track it down.

I do like the Coral Golem and did consider it. Sadly New Zealand does not have any large scale coral reefs. It would be more suited to many other of the pacific island cultures which have very similar beliefs.
It could be used as a stand alone figure or perhaps a Taniwha.

As my goal is a Maori/Polynesian like Oceania OGAM army it could be a good add to my list, may be not as corail creature but an Ocean/seabed elemental..
Only an excuse for me to create one like that .... lol lol lol

Occasionally a single figure is enough to tempt me into a new project. That coral elemental falls into that category. Lordy, he's beautiful! Anyone know how big he is?

And Polynesia does have a lot of untapped potential for gaming: unique cultures, gorgeous, dramatic terrain, the chance to model lava and catamarans, along with the excuse to scatter numbers of tikis about the board...What's not to like? If one really wanted to go whole hog, think of the food and drinks (!!!) that could be served alongside any game. Yes, it is attractive.

Wasn't there a company doing a kickstarter for a Polynesian fantasy range? A quick Google search didn't turn anything up so maybe it didn't happen.

Fun project, Nervisfr. I'll follow your progress with interest!

Hope i won't disappoint you   o_o

here is the comparison scale with a 28mm/30 Bones reaper figurine

And as you, Arundel,  i can do an army only for one or two characters or ideas of conversion for some kind of troops....

For OGAM, i have ideas for Inuit, Hebrew (but for the monotheist's culture, the choice is limited for the God  lol lol lol), Conan, etc.....

cheers
Eric

No disappointment here! He's about the size he should be. Hmmm...

Thanks, Eric!
