As I said in the last post I wanted to make moulds of the steamer Bellota. Here is the build steamer. The life boats and davids are still missing as are the air vents. I have to do two part molds for these. Will be done next week. Furthermore the masts are missing these will be done with brass rod.

Here is a picture of the cast steamer:

And a picture with the Warlord tanker alongside for size comparison:

The model as shown above is supposed to show the ship in ballast so riding very high in the water. I have done a loaded version ,too, have still to put it together, will show later.

More pictures of the molds, the parts and the build ship on: https://wargamesgazette.com/2019/03/07/casting-the-steamer/

This is getting to be quite a show. Nice work there. And the different ballast conditions - brilliant idea.

That has come out rather well!

Are you going to sell them?

I would sell some if someone is interested in them. But bear in mind that this is a hobby thing so no flashy packaging etc ;)

The Hunt Typ II destroyer escort for Cruel Seas in 1/300

This time I wanted to try a , may be easier, different way. I got a paper craft model of the Hunt Typ II (ORP Slazak) from JSC in 1/400.
As the model is in 1/400 I had to increase the size of the parts by about 30%. After doing that with a photocopying machine I started building the model like explained in the assembly instructions. The only difference being to fill all the hollow spaces with extruded polystyrene to make it sturdy enough for casting.

The next step was filling and sanding to get a rough hull

Next the paper hull sides were glued in , before that I punched out all the bulleyes to get them 3d for casting.

Many more pictures of the build so far on: https://wargamesgazette.com/2019/03/12/the-hunt-typ-ii-destroyer-escort-for-cruel-seas-in-1-300/

I started with the deckhouses and superstructure:

As you can see I always did a sandwich of extruded polystyrene and card to make it as sturdy as possible. The bridge superstructure and the gun platforms will be done as separate pieces to get rid of the rather large undercuts which would be impossible to cast.

That would be great ,but no i don't. The silicone I use is not really expensive if you manage to get at least 5 casts out of a mold ( I usually manage to use a mold much longer then that). The resin is a little cheaper then the silicone so what costs more is the resin if you do a lot of casts.

Interesting - where do you get silicone from?  I found it very expesnive compared with the resin!

So this weekend saw the Bellota finished in both versions. I added the missing live boats and davids and the masts and rigging. Only thing to add now is some crew and paint .
