one of our releases from Today 20.9.2022 a One One firing a Gyrojest Rocket pistol ..hard to believe it fired miniature rockeets ,the pistol itself only weighing a pound.. space age Nam! The Gyrojet is a family of unique firearms developed in the 1960s named for the method of gyroscopically stabilizing its projectiles. Rather than inert bullets, Gyrojets fire small rockets called Microjets which have little recoil and do not require a heavy barrel or chamber to resist the pressure of the combustion gases. Velocity on leaving the tube was very low, but increased to around 1,250 feet per second (380 m/s) at 30 feet (9.1 m). The result is a very lightweight and transportable weapon.[1] regards Ged

They were also inaccurate, prone to hang fires and fairly unreliable. The idea of a hang-fire rocket in a pistol is fucking scary. Love to know what the IA for that was. ‘Tilt, lock, look…. Whoosh?’

As an aside, the reason they were light is they were made from Zamac, the same stuff old diecast toys were made of. So what you really have in your hand is a working Dinky Thunderbird 1.

Nicely painted and a wonderfully offbeat subject.

Cool, not just wombles use bolt pistols*...

I read a review of their operation many years ago,the gun was extremely simple if weird.

You load  a round by moving the "bolt" forward, pulling the trigger releases the "bolt" which pushes the round back on to the firing pin. This ignites the propellant which should vent through four vents rotating and moving the round forward. As the round travels forward it pushes the "bolt" forward again, loading the next round. Rinse and repeat while the trigger is held back.

Very simple in operation.

One of the problems was ammunition reliability. Like a recoilless round, the vents had to be closed to protect the propellant but had to be cleared completely on ignition. Unlike a recoiless round, even a minor blockage affected the flight path.

* - gyro jets and bolt pistols were synonyms in Laserburn.

I’m curious as to whether they actually used the things on operations. I understand they tested them but I’m trying to understand the operational requirement for a fairly inaccurate and problematic, single shot pistol that wasn’t quick to re-load. Would take a brave man.

thanks for the input chap, appreciate the comments..............the weapon saw
some service, albiet limited,Used in one longer range
ambush and proved effective, dropped by the one two
picked up by the one one.....The idea was thrilling but
the long term usage was limited due to a host of difficulties
......the rockets were very expensive.a KGB agent tried to buy
one from a New York gun dealer..was refused ..but for some reason
he sold the guy the rockets he had. Makes no sense, more blurb
attached,

"A handful of Gyrojet weapons saw combat in Southeast Asia with the U.S. military’s secretive Studies and Observation Group, a cover name for a group of highly trained commandos that carried out top-secret missions behind enemy lines. As John Plaster wrote in his book SOG: The Secret Wars of America’s Commandos in Vietnam, SOG acquired a small number of the pistol version to try out in the field. SOG commandos were known to carry everything from Swedish K submachine guns to crossbows, so this was not surprising.

“In one test, a rocket round punched through an old truck door and into a water-filled 55-gallon drum, almost exiting its opposite side,” Plaster wrote. SOG men also test-fired it through sandbag walls and even tree trunks.

Vietnam uncovered problems with the Gyrojet weapons. The rocket engines disliked the humidity of Southeast Asia and sometimes burned unevenly. The need to achieve velocity at the expense of short-range lethality plus poor rocket reliability and other performance issues doomed the Gyrojet. A full-scale military contract was not to be, and ultimately only a thousand or so were built.

Today the Gyrojet weapons are collector’s items. Due to a lack of ammunition, it is almost unheard of to actually shoot one. There is at least one effort out there to restart research into Gyrojet technology. Maybe 50 years later, the time is right to try again to replace bullets with rockets. Or maybe this is still a sort of good idea whose time will never come."

Yeah, that’s pretty much the conclusion I reached. They tested them in country as opposed to actively used them on ops.
