Started basing and priming the first pack I have a question about the kneeling figure in pack NAM1. He is wearing some kind of parka with a hood? Grateful if anyone could shed some light over this type of uniform jacket?

It's the nylon US Navy rain jacket.

A two part suit with the over trousers:

Looks a lot darker in the photos:

Very useful, thanks.

There are an interesting selection of shades of green, even of the same pieces of equipment. One of the over-trousers looks nearly blue.

Just be careful of colour film pigments as they do change colour tone significantly.

Nevertheless, in the second last picture, the colour differences/similarities between flack jacket, shirt and trousers is interesting.  Three different combinations on three different blokes yet only two colours.

NB, just noticed the chap in the middle has the parka showing instead of a shirt.  Still, it is very similar in colour to the shirt and flack jacket on the right.
Gods, monsters and men,

Yes, even with electronic cameras there is much variation depending on the lighting and processing.

There is a lake in Canada that caused a lot of problems when tourists got home and took their film in to be processed. The lake is a very unnatural looking blue (glacial water full of rock flour), and the developers would throw their hands up in horror because no matter what they did, the colours would look wrong.

I was referring to this photograph about the blue trousers.

Yeah they are blue. Is he a marine corpsman with navy trousers on?

I'm wondering if that might be an image that was originally B&W and the colour has been added at a more recent date; there does seem to be a trend for doing this at the moment. Or as previously noted the film stocks of the day could provide quite a variety of results. Could have been shot on colour transparency film, or colour negative; could be from a 1960's print or from a later date when the film has been scanned digitally. A lot of the colour negatives from back then are lacking in tonal range compared to today and the colours are relatively flat.
Here's a good comparison:

B&W image by Don McCullin; the original prints were much darker, at some stage this has been tweeked.

Almost the same, at first I thought this was a coloured version of the B&W, but the angles are different, so could be another photographer next to McCullin shooting colour, or just a different frame that's been digitally coloured at a later date. I'm thinking the later.

Mildly concerned that the back blast will burn his shoulder off.

My thoughts exactly. Never got to fire one when in but that was always the warning - keep clear of the backblast!
