Had a look at a clip of 'The Odd Angry Shot' last night and it looked like a load of toss! The clip of Danger Close looked good. As others have said on this thread, there are some great videos on YouTube about the Long Tan battle. One explained the troop movements really well!
The Odd Angry  Shot is a very good low budget film, however it is not a shoot 'em up film,it is more about mateship, loss, and how men can get along under trying circumstances. I urge you to read the novel .
Danger Close is a deeply flawed though broadly accurate film, watch the ABC doco, and read the many books about the action.
Anyone interested in the SAS in Vietnam should read Sleeping With Your Eyes Open by G. McKay a reasonably unbiased account.

In 'Odd Angry Shot' I liked two scenes best.
1) They are sneaking up on a suspected VC dump (at a ruined temple ?)
The tension mounts as they very carefully  crawl through the tall grass,
then as they get very close...  a US patrol ambles across their front with
    Ghetto blasters blaring.
2) Back in Aus, in a bar.  A local,  seeing their uniforms, asks, 'Are you just back from Nam?'
'No' is the laconic reply, & they continue with their pints.

I would be interested in confirming the snipers issue with the ANZACS in  Vietnam. Not come across any reference to them which kinda surprised me and as Carlos and Helen are on the subject perhaps they could provide some information? ???

Not really Vietnam related, but an interesting read about an Australian sniper during the Korean war.

Helen is correct. Snipers became part of the battalion establishment in the mid/ late seventies. There wasn’t such a thing within infantry battalions establishments in the 1960s and there was no central instruction cell until the 1970s. Bear in mind that the Australian Army’s focus since Korea had been fighting counter-insurgency wars in a tropical environment since the end of the Korean War. Malaya, Borneo/Malaysia and then Vietnam.

Sniping had been a thing in Korea, I had the pleasure of meeting the legendary Robbie Robertson on a number of occasions but even there IIRC it was done on an informal basis selecting, the battalion’s best marksmen. Of course the nature of the war and particularly the terrain made sniping a very useful art.

There were sometimes slight variations in establishment between battalions and Vietnam specific variations. The conversion of the AT platoon, or at least the dual purposing of such into tracker platoons, in some battalions being the best known but I have never read of any battalion utilising dedicated snipers.

On the other side of the ledger, the opposition in Phuoc Tuy was noted as frequently employing snipers, have a squiz at the Lessons Learned TIB I linked to. Whether that meant specially trained and/or equipped snipers or more likely better than average enemy marksmen, is probably a moot point, the local opposition was noted for its generally poor record of marksmanship.

Presumably they simply placed telescopic sights onto SLR rather than were issued specific rifles?

Seems like I need to build a river and a beach that might or might not be safe to surf.

Nice.

The ghetto blaster and the surf board are cool.

What is the story behind the German style Jerry cans?
