Vietnam choppers, boats and vehicles in 1/48-1/50 ?
« on: February 06, 2019, 06:09:00 PM »
With all these new Vietnam ranges in the works (Empress, Black Sun, Gringo40s) I get all these images from Apocalypse Now, Full metal jacket, The Platoons etc in my head and cannot avoid to start planning for transport. I would be grateful for recommendations for:

-Huey UH-1 choppers
-M113
-PBR (classic patrol boat)

Plastic, resin or diecast in 1/48-1/50 scale. Many thanks!

I managed to get some very decently priced Corgi 1:50 Hueys but they're rather expensive now. They great for cobras too. For the slicks I got some Easy Model ready made kits which are very useful out of the box. I picked up a cheap 1:48 kit to use for a crash site objective / scenery piece.

I've got a Force of Arms M113 somewhere too.

It looks like there will be some vehicles produced as part of at least one of the new ranges too.

Are you UK based traveller?

I’ve got a whole bunch of 1:50 corgi hueys that I was considering selling off...

Slightly beaten to it there but I was just typing - Revell do a PCF "Swift Patrol Boat" plastic kit in 1/48 - no idea of its historic etc accuracy - I bought it 'cos I was looking for boats as a conversion basis for PA and pulp transport.
They are a number of Hueys available as plastic kits in 1/48 (Revell, Monogram, Easy Model and others) and Corgi do a  diecast one. Have a look on E-Bay. All the best, GDonk

I've a water lined. Swift patrol boat. ( burried in the loft at the moment) that I'd be willing to part with later in the year. So when you do get going drop me a reminder PM.

Mark.

Italeri make 1/48 UH-1D and UH-1H models if you after slicks. IIRC they also make a B model gunship as does Revell (ex Monogram kit). The best build for wargamers is the lovely Hobby Boss 1/48 UH-1C. It’s one of their easy kit range. Basically falls together. Alas, its a C model which were almost exclusively dedicated gunships and the kit does not supply the weapons. Still if you aren’t fussed about makes and models it’s by far your best option because in addition to being a simplr yet accurate kit, it’s as cheap as chips. Locally model shops have them for a little over $20 AUD so probably a shade under ten quid in the UK.

Academy make a variety of  1/48 OH-6 Cayuse and Hughes 500 models. These are super cheap, so cheap I’ve even bought them just to use the crew figures for other projects. Italeri do the OH-47 if you want early war.

If you want a late war OH-58 Kiowas then there’s a good 1/50 scale diecast out there, IIRC it was Cararama.

I forgot. TAG produce a couple of 1/50 M113s They only manfacture them once or twice a year but worth checking their site or inquring directly.

Barrage miniatures make a variety of useful boats for Vietnam, including Yabuta junks and a variety of local sampans, all nominally 1/56.

Thanks for all the recommendations! As usual LAF has all the answers  :)

Patrol Boat: I have seen the Revell PCF but I was looking for the iconic PBR featured in Apocalypse now. It seems OG is the only option unless I can find the Monogram Rambo set somewhere at a reasonable price

Huey: I am really only looking for one model to fit some 28mm gunners into (Thanks for the offers anyway AKULA and Lord Raglan)The Black Sun crew are designed for the Italeri 0849 but the Hobby Boss mentioned by Carlos sounds tempting...

M113: seems still to be unsolved unless the TAG option works. I was surprised to read that the Corgi one is 1/43 while their other ”Unsung Heroes” are 1/50?

I think Corgi missed a great opportunity there when they produced some of the Vietnam range in 1/43. Had they kept their scale at 1/50, gamers would have flocked to their product. Personally, I have been hunting the Gun Truck that they did and managed to secure 3 of them over the years. I also have 3 of the generic transport trucks for convoys.
Cheers,

For the M113A1 and M113ACAV have a look at Parkfield Miniatures:

Totally forgot Park field, which is bad considering I have most of their figures.

IIRC Parkfield are 1/56 and the OP was looking for 1/48-1/50 scale models.

In the same vein, I could mention that Eureka do a couple of M-113s. Again they are 1/56 ish. There’s also South African poster here who makes a greyboard M-113. Cost effective.

The other source for a 1/48 M-113 is Quarter Kit/Gasoline. They aren’t cheap but they are superb models.

Empress are just about to put into production an M113 in 1/50 scale.

Empress are just about to put into production an M113 in 1/50 scale.

A new one? Your existing M113 kit has a fair level of detail, so I'd be interested in seeing what else could be added to that (other than details for specific variants). Though a M113 with a turret would be appreciated. Not just for that vehicle of course - I mean those turrets have appeared on pickup trucks and all sorts over the years. :)
