Africa: mounted natives

Does anyone produce native cavalry miniatures - I’m thinking in terms Herero/Nama/Sotho rather than more regular uniformed types such as colonial police?

In 15 mm, Highlander Studios make a herd of African Cape Buffalo and the herd comes with a figure riding one of the buffalo, if memory serves naked but for a loin cloth wrap.  A long time ago from an unknown source, in the same scale, I saw a mounted zulu, probably an induna.  That's all I know of.  Unless you move north into the Sudan or Tuareg country.  Then there are lots of options.

Empress and Foundry have done mounted Indunas in 28mm, but that's just about all I can recall off the top of my head. There are a small number of West African savannah horsemen out there  as well (both light and heavy types), but that doesn't really match with what you were asking about either.

You could also paint up the mounted Perry Boers as Herero or Nama

Also, this seems a good page to check:

There seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today...turn two points to port.

Tiger Miniatures have mounted Herero. The horses are a bit on the thin side, but can always be replaced with others.

Thanks - there are some possible options there. Hadn’t thought that Boers could be used in that way!

Black Tree Design do a pack of mounted Zulu scouts. Perrys have been planning to add mounted Basuto warriors to their Cape Wars range but nothing has been added to that range for some time - maybe need some more people to nag them?

Herero Wars is on my ‘to do’ list - also planning to paint some clean-shaven Boers (on foot and mounted), with some head-swaps for added variety. Askari Miniatures do a pack of Herero on foot IIRC. There’s also some suitable figures in the Perry Mafeking range, and hidden amongst various Foundry Darkest Africa packs. Tiger Miniatures are quite crude sculpts compared to the others.

Don’t miss the Herero Wars website and scenario book - written with TSATF in mind but readily adapted to other rule sets.

Actually, those scouts don’t look overly Zulu - which helps!

Wouldn't the Empress Native Light Horse fit the bill?

You know they possibly might well do. We all have differing amounts of leeway in what we find acceptable. Some would scoff at the idea, but probably many would be fine with it. They are outfitted pretty much in civilian gear or what could easily pass for it with the right paint-job.

As Plus Four mentioned Sotho, one might make the argument that these very figures are the closest thing available for what he wants, for the Hlubi Horse troop of the NNMC were actually Sotho who had settled in Natal.

They do seem lovely figures. I would love to get some. I think mine would firmly have to stay in the ranks of the NNC, though. Somebody has to fight my Zulus.

Do not want to hi jack the post...but is it a good book? Do you suggest it also as wargame source?
Thanks

Ps: as regards very basic mounted natives i bought for a project some semi naked mounted Arab tribesmen from the Essex 25mm ancient range..they have separate shield and javelins so you can use them as you want..same for nude figures from Irregular 25mm range
