Westwind Königsberg CoC campaign (updated 13 05 19)
« on: February 11, 2019, 04:04:13 AM »
Not quite an AAR (yet) but a preamble before we embark on another Chain of Command campaign. This time, as the title says, it's the Westwind campaign that appeared in the Lardies Summer Special 2014. As always there's a real pleasure in amassing the various miniatures and vehicles we might need and adding the various extra bits of terrain that will allow us to recreate the maps. Hopefully the blog post sets the scene before I start posting the various AARs as we play each scenario. You can find the post here https://thetacticalpainter.blogspot.com/2019/02/getting-ready-for-westwind-konigsberg.html

So we kick off with the first scenario - Probe at Moditten. As the title says it's a probe scenario, a fairly standard scenario to commence a Chain of Command campaign. First outing for my Soviet SMG platoon and while they are not short of firepower the smaller platoon must last the distance across the campaign. Time will tell if I've made a wise choice or if I'm simply tactically inept at handling this sort of platoon. There is a full AAR here https://thetacticalpainter.blogspot.com/2019/02/westwind-konigsberg-1945-scenario-1.html

We reach Map 2 in the campaign and the Russians have a substantial school building complex to defend, but the Germans can make a flank attack so they might find their defences stretched. A very interesting game unfolded. The full AAR is here https://thetacticalpainter.blogspot.com/2019/02/westwind-konigsberg-1945-scenario-2.html

We go back to school for the second playing on Map 2 of the Westwind campaign. The Germans need to make amends for the hold up in the last scenario and need a victory here to get their campaign back on schedule. With both sides having to make do with a single platoon this campaign is a fine balancing act. Both sides want a victory in each game, but at what cost?

The Germans continue their push to escape encirclement while I ponder my decision to select a SMG platoon to try to stop them. To be honest I'm enjoying the challenge it presents, despite their small squad size and limited range, in the right situation they have a lot of hitting power. I've tried my best to create the Metgethen map and was quite pleased with the way the table turned out (despite the fact it has a decidedly French feel and looks nothing like East Prussia in January.....).

Another cracking game, the full AAR is here https://thetacticalpainter.blogspot.com/2019/04/westwind-konigsberg-1945-scenario-3.html

Really great read once again! Love the narrative style of those and the effort you put into these reports...I never cared much for battle reports or AAR, but these are so exciting! :-*

The Russians may have lost the last scenario but they managed to deal the Germans a very bloody nose in the process, so they decide to strike back immediately and see if they can take advantage of the situation. The campaign rolls on and I continue to test my decision to try this with a SMG platoon. We reach Map 4 and the Signal Box at Seerappen with both platoons worn down with casualties. The Germans continue to push forward and the Russians really need to win a scenario to push the Germans off their schedule. Another tense and very interesting encounter in a great campaign. Good stuff. I do really enjoy such detailed game reports. I suppose it's the next best thing to playing one.
