On a short winter-sun trip to Murcia, Spain we took time to look at the fifteen inch coastal battery built in the late twenties and one of two designed to protect the Spanish naval base of Cartagena.

These massive guns were fired in anger during the latter stages of the Spanish Civil War as Nationalist forces attempted to land troops in support of an uprising in Cartagena with one transport ship sunk from three hits, causing the ship to break in two.

Often it is better to remain silent and let people think you are stupid than to open your mouth and remove all possible doubt.

They've got a Vickers 6-inch coastal artillery turret preserved in the excellent military museum at Santa Cruz de Tenerife as well (nowhere near as big as yours, but size isn't everything).  I'll be there again next week - can't bloody wait! :)
