Weird modelling tip required?
« on: February 22, 2019, 09:13:43 PM »
I'm considering a swarm of bees!
For my new Warlords of Erewhon Dwarf army.
Firstly, does anybody know any manufactures who make one?
If not any ideas of how to model one?
I'm thinking map pins painted up?
Anything better would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

I would also love to see the answer to this.  I have been looking for miniature bees for a year or two with no success.

Not that I've tried this, but perhaps strands of fibre optic 'rod' (the flexible stuff) with a bit of heat applied to one end, turning it into a blob, to paint bee colour. The 'bees' will move on the ends of the rods, the rod will be less visible than a metal pin. Might be woth a try if you have some strands handy, available usally at hobby electronics stores or as lights in gifty shoppes.. eg https://www.coolthings.com.au/fibre-optic-lamp-pink?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8-na1dvQ4AIVEg4rCh1higHgEAQYCCABEgLBPvD_BwE

Good idea!
I've currently got a mate drawing one in CAD, then printing it on his printer.
Not sure how small he can get them, resolution permitting.
They'll have to be big fantasy bees...

At 28mm the individual bees would be lost so why not model the dark mass of the swarm in the air?

Maybe some cushion filler or wire wool mounted and teased out into an irregular shape and painted a slightly dark neutral color?  My other suggestion would be to forgo the bees and scratchbuild a hive.  That mounted on the base or even a combination of both would get the point across.

Not tried it yet but considering using a clear plastic packaging dome with the bees painted on.  Probaby just blobs of yellow and black paint.

I've definitely seen something similar to that one done before so it's worth a shot!:

I'm keen to see what comes of this. I wanted to do it myself for Tanga 1914 some years ago, but kind of gave up because it seemed sort of hopeless that I would get anything I was satisfied with.
