Interesting article in today’s Guardian on the Spanish Ministry of Culture’s cataloguing of Spanish shipwrecks in the Americas from 1492 - 1898
Less than 1% down to pirates and privateers apparently...

I suppose that makes sense, as pirates were trying to capture ships and their cargoes rather than sink them, but it still gives a bit of a lie to the old movie cliche of Spanish galleons laden with gold being sent to the bottom in furious exchanges of broadsides...
