The Keep - plus more.
« on: March 30, 2019, 09:17:31 PM »
Always wanted one so time to build it.

The plan: build a semi modular keep/tower which allows it to be a standalone outpost, a ruined tower or part of a small castle.

The main tool. A 3D printer.

Started by modifying some files from Thingiverse. It's a big learning experience which so far I have found enjoyable.  As the keep will be octagonal, I created pieces incorporating two wall sections with the appropriate angles. Geometry for the win!

After printing some test pieces to validate the concept, printed a whole bunch more over a few weeks.

Test fitting

So far the various pieces include blank walls, arrow slits, windows, doors, stairs, parapet, circular tower walls and a few specialty pieces. I had a good idea of what I wanted but this allowed me to play around with various configurations before assembly begins. It's going to be a shell building now so no interiors; will have separate floor plans if needed.

A better idea of were it's heading.

Cheers

A bit of progress. There will be 3 different tops: a vanilla parapet, one with hoarding and a ruined top.

The parapet top. The top layer is not glued in place - just dry fitting.

The window level with the hoarding which will be above that.

The ruined top - still figuring that out - just making it up as I go along.

The keep looks very professional indeed. How long did it take to print all parts?

Very nice. I am getting more and more tempted to get a 3D-printer myself ...

Good question.... not quite sure. There's about 40 some pieces. Can print 2-3 per night which is when I run longer print jobs. So 3 weeks at night, maybe 1 week if  you print during the day also. I did it over a period of about 6 weeks as don't print all the time.

Thanks
And the update.

I will echo what others said about this project really making it hard to resist buying a 3d printer. That is just lovely work, and I appreciate the mix of printed pieces along with scratch built pieces. I think the end result is going to be fantastic.
