Here we go!
The broader idea beyond the spaceport is, as told above, a whole new board. My old urban boards were made of plywood (I got those like a decade ago, I didn't even know mdf existed!) and foam.
But after these years I'm after a totally different setting, a desert town. However, I'd like to try an experiment. I'm aiming for a true 3D board, i.e., not a regular board with some buildings where the minis can climb to shoot. I'll try to make a board that has as much height as it has depth. Or even more, if possible.
For the setting, I'd like a backwater world, something in the mood of old Rogue Trader example Logan's World. That means to me a mix between the Anasazi cliff palace:
But with the density of Santorini:
Of course I cannot achieve that with my old boards. So I finally got a 120x60cm mdf board and will build the rest using foamboard, for weight issues.
The spaceport is 30cm diameter, so its building will have to be the largest all over the board. I didn't want it to be at ground level, but as high as I could get it to be. So I insist, the building is going to be huge...
Here it is:
50cm high, all I can do given my storage restrictions. Once on the board:
The structure is pretty firm, I reinforced every square without compromising its weight, so this could resist a tornado...
So OK, this is going smoothly, I like the aspect and the way it's turning out, lalala I'm so happy... Oh, by the way, I haven't tried to get it into the wardrobe, let's see how it...
...
...
ARE YOU %$#@ KIDDING ME!!??
It doesn't fit. Just a matter of milimeters. The space on the wardrobe is slightly more than 50cm, but... I didn't take into account the door. When opening it, it is impossible for the building to fit into the wardrobe. Silly me.
After going through the five stages of grief, I finally made a decision. I couldn't cut the upper part, the spaceport makes it totally impossible. I had to cut out 2cm from below. Yup, the part with every square reinforced, which could resist a tornado... That one.
Long story short, the building is 48cm high now and everything is in order
Of course what you have seen is but the most basic shape of what's to come. I have to add secondary structures and buildings, stairs, bridges and stuff. Just an example of what I'm talking about:
So this is the true beginning! A lot of work ahead, but I hope it will look nice when finished.

I'll keep on building stuff and explain what's in my mind for the whole board.
