FIW Event game help. M&T (UPDATE: Pics from Event)
« on: March 22, 2019, 07:52:29 PM »
Need some recommendations. I'm putting together a demo game for a local event on the 29th. Current table test setup in pictures.
The British force consists of 4x12 Provincials +1 officer, half defending a remote outpost and half on the lake Erie coast escorting supplies just dropped off by a Briganti.
The French have 2x9 Marines +1 officer, 2x8 des bois +1 officer, and 1x5 indians. They can deploy in the forest and/or behind the 2 thick woods.
The French goal is to destroy the supplies and if able burn the outpost. The British need to defend the outpost and get the supplies safely into the perimeter.
Things I need input on:
1.I'm thinking of having the units at the outpost be low on powder and that's what the others are bringing, so to show this I'd have them take 2 actions to reload.
2.the resupply force is also dragging cannons to arm the block house and id have it require 3-4 men to move but they cant be used.
3.the ship will have a small crew that can man 1 canon and 1 swivel gun to provide support, worried that would be to overpowered.
4. What's a good way to cover transition from water to land and look good? Thinking of just covering it with sand.
Thoughts?

Well, the easiest way to make the 'transition' from water to land would be to cut your land pieces and have them on top of the water - but I'm guessing that is probably a 'no go'.  Sand will work but pretty messy.

I don't know the rules so I can't help much on your other points but sounds like a fun scenario.  I'm running an FIW game at a local convention that is basically red team versus blue team in an encounter battle.

Hope you get it worked out and you and your players have fun.

racm32 - What type of body of water are you using to transition to the land?  Is it a lake, river, ocean/gulf shoreline you seek to represent?  Each of those could require a different treatment, a muddy riverbank, sandy shoreline, rocky riverbank, earthen bank or undercut bank, freshwater beach, silt or sandy.  Don't forget debris suitable for the chosen shoreline selected.  Maybe I am thinking too much, sand will always work.

It's supposed to be the shore of Lake Erie in North America. My understanding is that most of the shoreline is rocky or dirt with a few areas of sand.

My thoughts would be using your notation:-

1. For low on powder it might be better just to state the British have a fixed number of moves of firing? Once there gone, there gone.

2. Sounds good.

3. Give the ship guns a firing reduction modifier as being on a rolling ship even relatively calm will affect their accuracy.

4. Why not use gravel or small rocks at the boundary to simulate a rocky shore line? Still messy but not as much as sand?

Sounds like an interesting scenario and one I might copy as I have a nice sailing ship that has never been used. Let us know how you get on with the demo.

For transition between "land terrain" boards and "sea" tarp, I made a few coastal terrain strips 20 cm wide, from polystyrene etc. with miniature railway "grass", and sand, glued on. It needs some work but then you can use them later for many other historical or fantasy contexts.

However if there's no time to make these I would scatter some sand on the sea line (although rubbing miniatures on sand while moving them is not very good for bases paint).

I do intend to make transitions like yours when I get around to making actual game boards. However, due to lack of storage, I'm limited to a game cloth. As this is supposed to be a Lake shore line for Lake Erie it has been suggested that I use model rail ballast as most the shore a stones and gravel rather than sand.

Maybe you could glue the sand and rail ballast to a narrow strip of cloth to cut down on the mess?

As you say the real thing is rocky with some sandy bits, how about
clusters of rocks (from the garden) to break up the sandy bits.
A cluster of 'rocks' (maybe with a few bits of lichen) then a 'sandy' beach,
then another 'rocky' outcrop and so on.
You can even use the rocky bits to help disguise the join (beach to land).
If you have a few small hills to continue the outcrops onto the mainland,
which again you can disguise where they join with lichen and maybe a few trees?
The above would reduce the ruler straight edge (beach/land) effect.
Hope your game goes well.
