Would This Work For Your Sci-Fi Gaming?
« on: March 26, 2019, 12:32:00 PM »
I just came across this item, and thought some of you might find it useful as a playing surface:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Abstract-Wall-Vinyl-Background-Backdrop-3x5ft-Photography-Studio-Props/142475933077

Or at least for taking photos, seeing as how it is apparently a non-glare material.

Anyway, enjoy.

Yes it would.
It looks great.
The price is nice, BUT
the cost of getting it in the UK is a deal breaker.

I found similar items on Amazon for photography backgrounds.   Picked up large one with an interstellar background for space ship combat.

WilliamB:  “I found similar items on Amazon for photography backgrounds.“

That’s where I came across the one in my link above.  :)

This might be of interest to you then:

Reminds me of the opening shots from Red Dwarf.

This one isn't suitable for my needs... however I think you've stumbled on a really good idea here.

A quick search of Ebay and I've found a ton of vinyl backdrops in browns/greens/greys that would be suitable for a generic playing surface to cover with terrain.

Even the 7'×5' ones are only about £10 inc delivery which is much cheaper than the ones marketed by gaming companies.

Wonder what the quality is like?

I just ordered this one, the “Mud Road Texture”:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/US-Photography-Background-Photo-Vedio-Props-Backdrop-Scratches-Texture-Art-New/273215815488?var=572498719738

I hope it can do double duty on my small table (3x5ft), for both off-world desert (like a Firefly outer rim planet) and for post apocalyptic wastelands.

Well, for those worried about postage to UK, Amazon.co.uk seems to have something of this type as well. 4X:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/ZAIQUN-Photography-Background-Backdrops-Studio/dp/B0714R3CKL

Not sure how fine detail they have, might have to try one to see.

Mud road texture looks nice, but the don't ship to the UK.
Low shipping is nice, but Her Majesty's Customs & Excise will want their
pound of flash & the Post Office will want a few quid 'For the admin' ie. one form.
I will look on internet for similar UK based stuff. Thanks lads.
By the way let us all know what they are like 'in the flesh'.

You can specify in Ebay for UK sellers. There are plenty such as this one https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F322973970272
Still under a tenner free postage.

Thanks Magpie. I will look further into UK suppliers. Worth having one or two of them at those prices.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ve ordered one with a brown / desert print.

I’m interested to see what the finish is as they all seem to be described as cloth and vinyl

It will probably be very thin, but I’ll post pictures.  At least the glare should be minimal when I take them, seeing as how they are made for taking photos.
