Thank you for this info buddy, however, my period of interest is fairly narrow, 1665 to 1680, including the War of Devolution and The Dutch Wars. If you can find information on dragoons in this period, please point the way as I would be hugely grateful.

A big Spanish contingent is planned once I have finish the Dutch brigades, so waiting patiently for Nick to release them into the 1672 range.

Thank you for the offer of information, I will definitely be in touch  ;)

I'm not aware of any primary sources detailing dragoon coat colours for the Dutch War era, with the exception of one eyewitness account from 1671 describing the Régiment Royal as wearing blue coats faced red. The adoption of uniforms by dragoon regiments appears to have been a gradual process which was only completed by the end of the Dutch War, but it would make sense for the King's regiment to be among the first to receive uniforms.

Terra firma is only reached with a list published in 1680 in the Mercure Galant and most people - yours truly included - generally use it as a guide for the 1675-1679 period, which may not be entirely accurate but probably doesn't stray too far from reality either - we know so little about 1670's uniforms that beggars can't afford to be choosers anyway. It seems likely that by the battles of Cassel in 1677 and St Denis in 1678, most dragoon units had already more or less settled for the coat colours and facings they would wear throughout the 1680's (what was worn in the early years of the war - say 1672 to 1675 - is another matter altogether as we know precious little about the clothing worn then save for a few exceptions).

The most convenient English language source for dragoon uniforms from 1680 to 1715 is Robert Hall and GianCarlo Boeri's CD, sold through Baccus in the UK :

https://www.baccus6mm.com/catalogue/WSSUniformCDs/

As far as regimental histories as concerned, Henri Choppin's venerable Histoire générale des dragons remains the go-to book, though you need to be able to read French to use it as I don't believe it was ever translated into English.

Incidentally, if your main area of interest is the pre-1680 period, most maison du roi units had yet to adopt the uniforms they would retain until the French revolution : the Gardes Françaises were in grey coats with grey lining and cuffs and silver lace, and red breeches and stockings (their distinctive blue coat faced red with white lace was not adopted until 1685), while the horse grenadiers wore red coats with red cuffs until the early 1690's, only going into blue coats in 1692.

I am being dense but are the Baccus CDs the same as the P&SS Uniform books?

Yes, they are. Baccus sell the Hall & Co CD's only whereas the Pike and Shot Society have the much more expensive book versions.
