Western Town Chapter Three
« on: May 11, 2019, 08:36:19 AM »
Continuing on with my Western Town story.....

CHAPTER THREE

Meanwhile, about three miles outside of town, a cattle drive is approaching from the south.
The herd is being driven to the river to drink, graze and be bedded down for the night.

While the younger drovers are getting ready to hit the town, the older hands have volunteered to sing the cows to sleep.
Patterson is the end of a long drive. The veteran cowhands have come too far to lose the herd, so close to the end of the trail.

Raider Ron Angleton yells over to Dave "Chief' Gall to tighten up the herd.
A few cows are drifting off and Raider doesn't want to spend the night chasing strays.

Up ahead, Gary "Lawdog" Linden is more worried about the tracks he has seen on the outskirts.
The track near the trees are wolves. A hungry pack just waiting to catch a stray calf has been tracking the herd since they crossed into Iowa.

"Keep 'em movin', boys"

Raider calls over to "One Shot" Kurt Fredericks to drop behind and hunt the hunters. Kurt is the best shot with a rifle that
any of the drovers have ever seen. There will be 3 less wolves to worry about come morning.

Lawdog Linden will be riding point all night, with a keen eye out for rustlers. It's the final night of the drive and the Ramrod
has taken every precaution to ensure that these cows make it to Patterson on the morrow.

Slick Rick Koch guides the herd into the river. Once the herd is down for the night, the Over The Hill crew can relax a little.

The younger Cowboys are back at the camp, getting ready to hit the town hard tonight. The payroll awaits them at the
Wells Fargo office and their credit is good at Jim McGough's Saloon and Dance Hall. Whiskey, women and gambling are all on the menu.
