how to transport Macedonians?
« on: May 15, 2019, 03:15:53 PM »
Hi guys,

I am currently in the market for an ancient army in 28mm. The Macedonians with their pikes are my favorite, but I have no clue how to store/transport them.  ???

For my other armies, I use foam trays. But I am not sure if this approach will work with the Macedonians.

Any suggestions?

What are your sarissa/pikes going to be made of?

@Yuber Okami: plastic. I plan to buy the Macedonians from Victrix.

@OSHIROmodels: Had the same idea. But maybe someone figured out a smarter way.  lol

I have a big cardboard tray with high sides that has some insulation foam at the bottom.  This foam is light and fluffy and has plastic on both sides.

I have slit a line in the plastic so I can lay them down in the tray.  My units are only 15 men each so I can fit about 4 units laying down per box.

I then place a second layer of this foam across the top.  In a pinch I can lay extra trays on top for more layers and more armies.

They have traveled safely cross-country in this set-up, so it works pretty well.

I like the idea of having metal clad bases, so they sit on a secure magnetised lining in a padded box or something. Spears breaking are no fun, I cannot imagine pikes with their length in plastic.

Alternatively just switch out plastic pikes for wire spears that are real long. That's a ton of work, though.

I use steel bases and line a suitable really useful box with magnetic tape bought from Ebay.

I use an 8.1L really useful box.  I lined the bottom of it with flexible metal and put flexible magnets on the bottom of the bases.  I get the flexible metal and flexible magnet with self-adhesive from McMaster Carr (if you're in the states).

I have five 7l Really Useful boxes full of Macedonian and Successor pike (c.1100 minis).  I use 0.75mm-grade magneitic sheet under the bases, and rubber/steel paper to line the boxes.  I use so much of it... I decided to sell it!  :-)   https://bigredbatshop.co.uk/search?q=magnetic

How are the figures based? Single or in multiples?

Thanks for all the suggestions! Your comments are highly appreciated.  :)

@SteveBurt: I haven't decided yet. Personally, I prefer single based miniatures. But four minis per base could also be nice for this kind of army.

Macedonian pikes are tough. For short trips by car I use a metal toolbox- the bottom bin is tall enough for pikes on magnetized trays. I usually put cavalry on top , light troops in the middle shelf, and phalangites in the bottom. It is very sturdy, but heavy.  The other way  if you have single based, then store them flat in a flat box. Plastics are very much lighter in weight but the pikes are woefully brittle. I suspect that a deeper plastic bin box will be best nowadays bu they get ungainly with lead figures. I have a plastic pike unit- some break on the way down from the cabinet upstairs down to the gaming table.
