I suspect it’s more dust than rust. Aluminium doesn’t rust.

Cheers for the comments guys.
Re the weathering; I didn't even go down the chipped paint route with this one (mainly as I have no idea what colour they are underneath).
It's just supposed to be a wee bit grubby, mud and dust with a bit of dried sea grass mixed in. A new product for me, sold by AK as a diorama accessory. Looks like something a dung beetle should be pushing around, but once chopped up a bit, turns into a natural fiber version of static grass (looks wise).

The jerry can holder is the bamboo ladder from the Viet Minh assault troops pack. I was going to have a go at the racks of ammo boxes these twin .30cal versions had attached to the top sections, but once I realised that I had no ammo boxes, at all, I went with jerry cans. Was thinking of some sort of tie downs for them, then spotted the ladder. Ladder was a perfect fit for the space...

Yes, well, there is that... :D

As Carlos alluded to, the main "box" of the 113 is aluminum.  They start out with the naked silver of the aluminum, and then are primed and painted.  IIRC, the primer color was either white, or a rust reddish/brown.  But it's been almost 30 years... ;)

No idea what the primer colour was but inspection of photos show that any deeper scratch or abrasion shows the bare aluminium underneath, so a very light silvery grey. Tracks were steel so they rusted.

As a note for any interior bits, the early diesel M113 A1 versions that saw service with the Australians had their interiors painted white. At some stage it changed to that slightly bilious 'seafoam green'. Hatch interiors were painted in the standard external colour, be that US OG or from about 1967 onwards Australian lustreless OD.  If you fancy the seafoam green then Vallejo Green Sky is a pretty good match.

Worth noting that pre-1967, Australian vehicles were in British Deep Bronze Green, save for the M113's which I believe came in their existing US OD. So if want a pre 1967 Landie  or ACCO it should be DBG not lustreless OD.

How's that for rivet counting pedantry?

Ash's track looks pretty much spot on to me.

Had a go at a Gage, went with a less grubby look.

Cracking job mate. Still not sure if less is more or more is less, weathering wise :)

I think with a vehicle with such graceful lines less is definitely more. Very nice indeed!
