Prince Eugene of Savoy - Alexander Innes Shand
« on: May 24, 2019, 09:58:24 AM »
Prince Eugene of Savoy, remembered for his close association with the Duke of Marlborough, was perhaps one of the finest military commanders of his age, and his career spanned from his service at the Turkish Siege of Vienna in 1683 to his final campaign against the French in 1733.

Mr Steve has put together a review of this Military Commanders Series, that combines the memoir's of the great general together with a detailed summary of his life by Alexander Innes Shand.

Thanks fr the review.
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

Odd that one of the most successful generals of the times on his own right, and who ended his career as president of the Hofkriegsrat, the top military rank in the Hapsburg Army, is considered "Marlborough's Great Military Partner". I think that he could claim the opposite, i.e. that Marlborough was his partner! lol After all, he had a more successful career than Lord Marlborough, all things considered.

I agree it is a strange sub title but I guess given the century when it was released and its potential audience then it was done purely to boost sales.

Whilst I was aware that Eugene and Marlborough had great mutual respect for each others abilities, I was interested in the friendship and regard for his skills that Eugene had for Marshal Villars, he also considered The Duke of Berwick an excellent General and opponent. Berwick I was surprised to learn was a nephew of Marlbourgh’s through his sister
