Palm Trees
« on: May 24, 2019, 09:08:13 AM »
So, what are people using for palm trees?

I have just added them to the Rubicon wish list sub thread:
http://forum.rubiconmodels.com/index.php?topic=862.0

4D Models stock three ranges:
http://modelshop.co.uk/Shop/Landscaping/Palm-Trees?orderby=1

Pegasus seem to have two sizes of palm tree and one banana tree, but availability seems patchy.

Has anyone got a good recipe for making them?

The Model Tree Shop for me. I think the prices are quite reasonable for the quality.

Cheap acquarium palm tree, mid gray acrylics over the (brown plastic) trunk, darker green over the plastic foliage, matt varnish over the top. These days, I'd probably add a brown wash. If I was doing the the old leaves, I'd use a beige colour. At the time of painting I had 2 full size palms in the yard to compare with!

Depends on how anal you want to be. None of those beautifully modelled palms from the Model Tree Shop are actually found in SE Asia at least not in the wild. In general terms, you will mostly want Cocos nucifera, the common coconut palm. Sugar palms are common but date palms would be a rarity.

Pegasus do two packs, the ‘Type B’ pack are coconut palms. The Type A, could with a bit of work be used for other endemic species. I have had both and my observation would be that, whilst they are reasonable models, they are fairly fragile, the fronds brittle and the plastic was a bugger to paint. There’s only three to a pack so they are hardly the most economical option. All things considered the Woodland Scenics ones are better value for money.

Overall, I’d echo the response to look on ebay or Ali Express. There are god knows how many Chinese vendors selling palms. Choose carefully some are just child’s play set quality but there are some good models there too. A number of sellers, particularly on Ali Express sell bulk deals.

Quite true but I divined that UVS wanted them for Vietnam.

It was in a block of threads about Vietnam ^__^.

Of course for that FMJ look, Spanish Palms and plastic plants are the look to go for.

Do check out "Terrain Tutor" on Youtube - Mel Bose does a great tutorial series on his Burma terrain - Lots of inspiration, that is directly usable for 'Nam!

He goes into depth about palm trees too - usable for... well anywhere that has palm trees ;)
