Old gnarled trees? Suggestions?
« on: May 27, 2019, 10:32:50 PM »
I was looking for some old gnarled trees to add to my ever growing 28mm terrain collection. Preferably a good size, and maybe resin. Suggestions?

Lavender bushes give good, knackered trees. I've got quite a few and they look the part.
cheers

Geranium and chilli plant roots are good too; have a look at my BSC (build something competition) 2019 threads over on workbench,I built a small wood and scratch built a few.

For smaller trees Heather is useful too. I used it for all the branch structure on my 'ancient tree' BSC2019 build.

Natural option abound, but as you mentioned resin, maybe plastic would work for you as well? Because in that case, perhaps GW's Citadel Wood (or Sylvaneth Wyldwoods as they're known these days) might work for you?

Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

There are some out of control lavenderbushes in that garden that my wife has been on my case about lately... two birds with one stone!

Do they lose they're fragrance when dried?

Yes unfortunately. Although you might still get a whiff every now and then.

I'd count that as a plus. Its a lovely smell but I'd might be annoying the tabletop in the long run.

This. I pull them up with the roots, and inverted they sometimes look best.

My house is surrounded with an old field maple hedge, which supplies me with really nice, gnarled sticks. I used that for my recent weirwood tree.

Thanks for all the suggestions lads. Much appreciated. There used to be a company I've bought trees from in the past called Sweetwater Scenery, that used sagebrush to make their trees and they were amazing. Sadly, they no longer operate. They did sell bags of sagebrush that would have been perfect for my needs.
