where can I get model handrails for 28mm?
« on: June 01, 2019, 01:30:51 PM »
Looking for industrial type handrails that would be suitable for 28mm models, about chest or waist height to the model I guess. So far I've not found anything online! If anyone can point me in the direction of some it would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.

Get some wire mesh (about 5mm squares). I bought one piece for a couple of quid 3 years ago
& I still have about half of it left.
Snip off what you want & apply. For railings leave spikes that will go into the model.
If the 'model' is soft (e.g. foam board) push it into place & secure with the appropriate glue.
if the 'model' is hard (e.g. plastic kit) drill some holes, put the 'spikes' in & glue.
The mesh is also good for making ladders to go on the side of buildings, just leave 'spikes'
on either side of the rungs, bend them 90 degrees & 'push' ( or place into drilled holes) and
you have a useful way that figures can get from one level to another.

Get some wire mesh

This, but the one I use is 10mm mesh. I suppose a 12-15mm mesh will give you a belly/chest-height sort of dimension.

It might be worth looking at O Gauge fencing, I think Ratio do concrete fencing posts.

Fenris Games has a variety of fences and railings: Link.

Plastruct makes O scale handrail which is a littler big for 28mm but looks fine: link.

Remember O Scale is smaller than "O Gauge",  1/48 is often used as a vehicle scale for 28mm whereas I think only TWD:AOW uses O Gauge (1/43) vehicles.

look at model ship parts suppliers. they all sell machined brass stanchions in various sizes which you connect with thin gauge wire.

My favourite supplier is https://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/

Manufacturers like billings boats and mantura make them with 1, 2 or 3 holes and in various heights. There is plenty of choice

That is correct; I meant to type O Gauge.

The plastruct you mentioned is, as you said, O scale (1/48).

I, too, have been searching for some handrails - have a lot of the necromunda terrain, but don't like their odd gothic - Sci-Fi picket fence railings.  Tried the plastruct route myself.

I ordered some HO scale hand rails.  Tried to get a pic next to a 28mm Star Wars Legion model.  Needless to say, the HO are definitely too small, but they were cheap and I gave it a shot.  From the top of the base, barely past the knees.

Then I stopped in to a railroad shop and looked at the O and G scale, with model in hand to get the right size.  Still hard to get good sizes, but the O scale worked size wise.  Keep in mind they are very thin and fiddly.  Personally, I don't think the rails will hold up to gaming.  I did pick up an O scale ladder that I think will work when I turn it sideways.  Very interested in what you come up with, though.

I di this. It works a treat.
