Help - Rorke's Drift Footwear?

I am painting some Rorke's Drift defenders. Would the ORs and NCOs have worn black boots with gaiters? Are the gaiters black or dark grey? The officer in the picture below has brown leather gaiters but I have also seen black knee-high boots in illustrations, which is most likely for Chard and Bromhead?

Black boots and gaiters for OR's. Chard and Bromhead most likely dark brown leather? That's how i did mine and they look the part.
