Corragh V2
« on: June 07, 2019, 08:07:15 PM »
Hi.

Iīve been gaming in my own setting, the world of "Barony of Corragh" on and off for a couple of years. This year I am going to reboot the setting which will include how I paint my models. My inspiration on colour schemes is actually Mount and blade, meaning that the rank and file Soldiers will be painted to fit any army and using characters to define the faction. My original plan was to make a full set of shields for each rank and file and for each faction. But in this reboot I think I will find a set of brown or grey for the shields instead. Here is  small sample of some rank and file and Captains of the Barony of Corragh.

Meanwhile on the opposite side of the river the infamous goblintribe "Skulltakers" are gathering for a raid on the barony. It is led by Grumnukk wielding his looted shield. Knowing it will taunt the humans.

Having caught wind of the raid The Barony of Corragh mustered its defences. Unfortunatly no Lords of the realm could participate as according to the God of Northstar, they were in the mail.

As someone who also created his own setting for much of his gaming, great job. Really like your efforts so far.

Thank you Knight-Captain Tyr. I have followed your threads with great interest and I am amazed at the versatility you have. Being able to model and paint and also write as such high level is inspiring to me. I hope you keep it up.

Located in the northeastern part of the Cheldin kingdom the Barony of Corragh had the possibility to grow. According to most sources the Barony were originally populated following the Aenoc river and spreading outwards. The oldest known settlement in the Barony was the city Shallowbeach overlooked by the Castle Corr. Shallowbeach were situated at the entrance to the river Aenoc in what was a natural harbor. The outlet of the river is very wide but the beaches are very accesible and at the height of the Barony there were several ferries running between the eastern and western part of the Barony. As the Aenoc continues north it becomes less accesible as the river banks become steep, with few natural beaches. The water on the other hand runs slowly indicating that it is very deep.

The eastern lands from the Aenoc river constitutes mostly of gently steeped hills dressed in grass. The land was easily cultivated and produced much harvest due to the richeness of the soil and many small lakes. According to the scholars the land were so fertile because it was surrounded by the green mountains from whos peaks were constantly white from snow. Between the mountains and the plainlands there were large forests mainly consisting of Oak and Birch trees.

As the Aenoc river heads north it divides into two rivers. The land between them remained mostly unpopulated as it wasnīt as fertile and easliy accesed as other patches of land. But there is settlements. There are a few Lords whom have their holdings in the area. Their economy are mostly based on sheepfarming and lowgrade mining. The ore is of low grade quality and the access to firewood makes it hard to get any larger set-ups in the region. Also transportation to and from the area have to be by boat, making it less managebly as travelling on the river has become much more dangerous after the invasion.
The area between the rivers are home to many dangerous monsters, amongst them Hill giants. Apart from the monsters a few bandit hideouts have aslo been found and destroyed. But the local populance are certain there are more of them.

Even though the eastern part of the Barony always were the most fertile and therefore the riches. The eastern parts of the barony were the largest. The main populance of the Barony are now living the western part. The western shore of the Aenoc are home to many Lords holdings. As they are the first line of defence from the Goblins and Orcs on the eastern part. Most of the holdings are very new having been erected a generation ago. A holding generally constitutes of a Watchtower/ Keep holding watch over the river. There is also a manor and a stable with a few economical buildings. In close proximity to the Keep there is a few farms were the serfs grow the food necessary to keep the men-at-arms fed. Of course there are richer holdings as well.

One of the more prominent feature of the Barony western part is the forest of Wyld. The people of Corragh donīt venture into it unless necessary. It is a dark forest home to many beasts and monsters. As far as the people know there are no settlements or active humanoids in it. But it is still dangerous. According to spellcasters and priests the Wyldforest is close to the realms of the spirits and not to be trifled with. But some lords have been cultivating the outskirts of the forest for many years never the less.

Another large feature of the western part of Corragh is the lake Rydwell. It is large and plentiful. But it is also very deep making the water pretty cold even during the summer. The Town of Cerrwyn is located at the eastern beach of Rydwell lake. The Town is overlooked by one of the largest castles in the Barony. This is the home of the Baron. Heading both east and west from Cerrwyn is the Kings Road. Heading west a traveller will come eventually reach the capital of the kingdom. Heading east a traveller will reach the ruins of the ferries once heading towards the of the city Shallowbeach.

Looming over the ferry ruins are the second largest castle in the Barony. It is home to the Sorceress Lady Bethiny Winterhearth. She is tasked with keeping the Orcs in Shallowbeach contained to easter shore, and keeping watch over the ruins of Shallowbeach. During the day her men keep watch in the towers, vigilant for boats trying to cross the river. During the night the river is patroled by waterspirits bound by Lady Bethiny. Their order is to sink all boats coming from east. Lady Bethiny sometimes binds air spirits to scout out the ruins or fight malignt spirits summoned by the Orc shamans.

Lady Bethiny Winterhearth
(A better pic will come later)

Bethiny is the older sister of Tuorm Winterhearth. She is a powerful sorceress tasked with defending the western shore and keeping an eye on the Eastern. Apart from herself and her three apprentices, she also have a couple of other magicians in the castle or surrounding lands. This in fact turns the castle into the closest thing of a magicians guild the Barony of Corragh have. One philosophical difference of this little guild and most other guilds in Chelin is that where other guilds would do research and develop their esotheric abilities. Bethiny and her collegues are training for war.
Bethiny have mastered the art of conjuring and binding spirits of the elements which she uses to the full extent. Her preference is spirits of the wind as they are most useful for scouting out what the Orcs on the Eastern shore are up to. Using her magic she have scouted out many attempts for raids, giving the local Lords time to prepare.

History
.
.
.
Corragh had become so large and powerful that the Duke were thinking of turning it into a County and grant Baron Chellic III the title of Count Corragh. The Lords of Corragh were supporters of this as the plan also included of several new Baronies being granted to the most powerful lords. Of course the Count to whom the Barony of Corragh were a vassal did not support this and there were murmures of war through the territories. The plans all came to a halt when disaster struck.
No one really knew were it started but a vicious plague drove through the realm. It started with a fever, but soon the skin started to develop large blood filled red boils on the body. Two days later the victim would start to vomit blood which in most cases led to death within a day. It didnīt matter if you were highborn or lowborn, the plague struck them all down.
As Corragh became weaker the Goblin and Orc tribes poured down from the mountains killing and pillaging as they passed. The Barony have had incursions before but this was different. Usually the tribes took their loot and returned to the mountains. But this time they stayed and started to transform their camps into permanent villages. This was an invasion. The men of the Barony fought back and tried to defend their territory but were constantly driven back. Many were killed or dragged of into slavery in the hands of the Goblins, but a few managed to flee. Either to Shallowbeach or crossing the river Aenoc. All attempts by the Goblins to cross the river in force were thwarted by the forces of the Barony.
In the end Shallowbeach were the last hold of the men left on the eastern shore. The populance huddled within its walls, fed by the ferries. As the Orc tribes started its siege of the city all civilians deemed not necessary were evacuated. Amongs them the youngest son of Chellic III, just a young boy. No one ever thought that the barbaric and uncivilized tribes of the Orcs would be able to breach the walls of Shallowbeach. But they did, and flooded the streets. As far as it is known no one survived the night in the city. It burned for over two days, until only walls of stone stood. The easter shore were now in the hands of the Orcs and Goblins.

The realm responding to this by granting new lands to the Nobles strengthening the defences along the river. Lowborns whom had shown great courage and gained glory during the battles were granted the right to wear a banner and call themselves Lords or Ladies. New noble families were born and old structures were laid to waste. As all mines with iron of good quality had been lost, deals were made and soon the Dwarven caravans made frequent stops in the new capital of the Barony, The town of Cerrwyn. The dwarves brought good steel and left with food, cloth and gold coins.

By now three generations have been born since the Fertile lands were lost. The plauge is a bad memory living only in the oldest of the populance. The barony is still onset by raids from the eastern shore, but they fight back and mourn their losses afterwards. The current Baron Corragh Aelfric II knows that he will probably not be the one to reconquer the Fertile lands, but he have started to prepare for it. He have ordered the Noble families to cross the river, scout the land and do what damage they can.

Riga ran away from home as early as she could, relying on her own wits and capabilities to stay alive. She got by on small theft and paoching as she hid in the rural areas. Later on she started robbing people as well, which eventually led her into a group of bandits. One day their camp were attacked by a knight and his retinue intended on either slaying or capturing them all. The battle were swift and Riva realised she was on the loosing side. With some of her fellows she found a good spot to make their last stand. Thats when the goblins attacked. The goblins were plentiful and suddenly both bandit and soldier fought side by side. In the end Riva found herself back to back with the knight. And then she got hit in the head.
She woke up in a cage together with the young knight who introduced himself as Lord Eirik Silvermoon. Together they endured the captivity for some days until they could escape. During the escape they saved each others lives several time until one of Lord Eiriks friends found them.
Back in the Lord Eiriks estate he offered her a place in his service as a gamekeeper, granting her a cottage and new life the community. He gave her everything she never had wanted. She also knew why she stayed. Riga had fallen in love with him. Seeing the irony and tragedy of it she felt there was nothing else to do. When she finally had found some one she loved it was a lord of the realm, which she as a lowborn never could get.

Mildred Zyrtant
Mildred have been around for a while, traveling around the realm. Her life goal is giving good advices to people whom are a lot happier than she is. Apart from her fighting skill she has also been accused of spellcasting. Milk go sour when she enters a room et cetera.
She have a tendency to arrive in time for a battle and attach herself to the leading general giving him or her good tactical advice. Such as....

It doesnīt matter if you win. The only thing that matters is that everyone else looses!

Thengil Darkmoor first heir to the Barony of Corragh leads three unnamed Lords of Corragh.
