Tribal Gladiators
« on: June 09, 2019, 07:36:42 AM »
I've been dusting off my Gladiators for some participation games at Little Wars Adelaide next month. Planning to use the Tribal ruleset as the playing card system works really well for the duelling combat of the arena. After running some games of Gladiators when Tribal first came out, I haven't done much with my miniatures since. So I decided I needed a decent arena, to make the battles look right. I passed on a Playmobil arena, and opted for the Sarissa training arena. Breaks down easily for transport and has all the components I need for a game (audience stand, holding cage and animal cages). I am just painting up some Lions to make the game a little more dramatic. Another pic of the full arena can be found here (and hopefully updates on the games of the day):

Looking good - the arena is a nice size (won't get in the way of arms) and has nice details.

Freelancer, have you given "Sons of Mars" a try for gladiator rules?

I haven't, no.
I get put off by the book keeping of multiple special skills and modifiers of a lot of Gladiator rules. Jugula was my preferred system, but the games became a bit static with building a combat hand. Tribal keeps the pace of the game up and the card system gives the feel of a duel with each bout of combat. It also has the advantage of being playable with a standard deck of cards.

Yes! Please check out Sons of Mars! I think you'd like that game.

Tribal is also a great game, though it can be generically used for anything that isn't gunpowder age or heavily melee base.  Games like sons of mars will give you much more depth. ;)

Great looking Arena, too.

I drowned in the "depth " of Sons of Mars. Didn't find it a very enjoyable ruleset. Tribal may be generic but it would certainly make for a more entertaining combat.

I always fancy seeing Gladiator miniatures and games.
