Probable new project... RMASG and LCT(A)
« on: June 19, 2019, 09:31:32 AM »
Like I need a new project…

So I’ve got permission from High Command to go to the Bolt Action Welsh Open in September and due to the presence of a 7 month old parasite and about 10 other unfinished projects I’m not going to have much time to paint up my intended force: Last Levy Germans in Berlin.  They have been sat languishing for over a year now…

So I’ve decided with it being 75 years since D-Day my 47 Commando D-Day force will get an outing instead.  Mostly as they are hard as nails, good fun to play and, crucially, already fully painted.

Now the BAWO format has a pairs tank war game at the start to break the ice… and my 47 Cdo have no vehicles at all.

So the plan:
Royal Marine Armour Support Groups consisted of troops with a Sherman V Observation Post and a pair of Centaurs (95mm howitzers).  The ones with the graduated marks around the turrets.
A vet Sherman (I’ve already got but will get a repaint) plus 2 Vet Centaurs would fill the points nicely and be a perfect match.  They also towed porpoise sleds – easy and thematic too.
Bloody rubbish in game but that’s not the point…Easy so far.

The mad bit: Given the propensity for display boards…  I was thinking a 1/56 scale LCT(A)
It’s a Mk5 LCT with some armour slapped on it plus a big wooden ramp so the Centaurs could fire over the bow ramp.
The Mk5 is one of the smaller versions and comes out at roughly 640x175mm

Using laser cut MDF for the structure and some 3d printed details it shouldn’t be *That* hard…

Seeing as the best value for the Centaurs is the pack of 3 Cromwells form Warlord I might maek a Centaur Dozer or ARV too...

Sounds like a suitably mental plan :D

Have you decided which battery of the RMASG they'll be from as all I can remember is that the 1st regiment landed on Gold, but not if either of the batterys was specific to Jig, which I think is where 47 commando landed.

According to here:
http://www.6juin1944.com/assaut/gold/en_page.php?page=69landing

It looks like 47 Commando landed on King Red and King Green but I'm not sure what they abbrviations actually mean in detail.

RMASG landed on King Red and King Green - not sure which battery/troop to choose, I've only just started to look.

I can't see a reference to 47 in there, where's it at, I could only find the T commando listing.

On 6th June 47 Commando headed for Port En Bessin, their primary DDay objective. However, their LCAs were attacked on the run in losing at least five and around eighty casualties so they came up short. They assaulted Port-En-Bessin on 7th June. 👍

Are they part of T Commando?  There are a lot of them.  Plus no reference to 47 Cdo anywhere else.  No other commandos listed as landing on Gold either.

TBH it doesn't really matter as the Commandos landed in LCAs not LST(A)s but mine will all be crammed into the LCT(A) with a pair of Centaurs adn a Sherman.

Deffo landed on Gold about two hours plus of H Hour if I remember?

If you take a more generic view then looking at the attacks on either flank of Sword beach For example , Commando units linked up with AVREs for the assaults on the strongpoints at either end.

Contrary to wargames definitions, on D Day the majority of Commando units struggled against dug in defenders so reckon those RMASG attachments will come in handy. 🤔👍

Got my plans printed out now.  It's pretty big but not too unweildy.  plans make it slightly shorter at around 600mm whne scaled to 175mm wide.  Will double check though but provided it's in proportion then it'll be fine.

Interesting that contradicts the site above, I wonder if the plans changed or if they drifted off?
I'm tempted now to have the LCT 'escorted' by a pair of LCAs for the infantry...  dammit. lol

So not if but when you get carried away how much of a fishing port are you going to build? There's no real challenge for you without it ;)
