Thanks to those that came out to Bushy Run's Games Day today. We had a great time.
The Carlist Game didn't go so well for the BAL. They really did give it a try to break out from San Sebastian. They sent up a pretty ragged line at first, but when the sun came up it revealed that half of the attacking force had advanced much further than the other half.
They engaged in a fire fight with the Carlists in the works while the other Carlists started to wake up and come to save their comrades. The BAL eventually launched a full on assault but it was a little too late and by the time they breached the initial defenses, the Carlists had strongly reinforced their position.
It was an interesting game. None of the players had played Black Powder before and so were a little hesitant at first. The cannons supporting the Isabellino's advance were the biggest hindrance for the government troops.
They were pretty determined not to get in the way of the artillery so delayed launching a potentially decisive assault on the lines. They seemed to want to soften them up with largely desultory artillery fire. Despite the two guns only having 1 shot and hitting on a 5 with the enemy saving half of the hits, they kept pounding away.
It was a mistake. By the third turn they decided that the one wound they inflicted on the besiegers wasn't enough to stall them any longer. They had received some breaks in some bad command rolls from the Carlist commanders in the back field.
As it turns out it was a fatal delay. The initial assault was poorly coordinated and thrown back with little loss in the Carlist trenches. The Royal Marines sent to assist the government troops were badly positioned and quickly destroyed without making any impression on the enemy.
Eventually the Carlists were able to launch a cavalry charge against the Isabellino cavalry that destroyed both brigades and caused BAL morale to fail.
The struggle ended there. The Carlist and Isabellino armies both broke at the same time. So it was sort of a draw, but the BAL didn't break out, so the Carlists got what they wanted, although the Carlists were also pretty depleted, having 3 of their 5 Brigades broken.
