French Flags 1849 Rome Campaign

Hi Folks,
I'm looking for French Flags for the 1849 siege of Rome in 28mm.

This campaign took place just a few months after Louis Napoleon was elected Prince President of the Republic, so nothing with "Napoleon III" is any use. I assume new Flags had been issued for the republic, but I'm not sure what design and if they would mention Louis Napoleon specifically.

Any suggestions?

..unfortunatly, also if living in Rome and working close to the battlefields of Roman Rep clashes,  i cannot stand Roman Republic idea and the Garibaldians bandits that were kicked out by our French liberators... so i cannot help for that period..but i'm sure  that you can find the right answer plus full colour tables  on the first vol of Funcken "19 c. Armies"..unfortunatly i have only the second one.
anyway, as an alternative,  if you do not have access to the the Funcken Volume and you have the patience to scroll down the whole blog of this Spanish collector you'll probably find Funcken plates..because he had scanned practically every vintage rare book on uniforms including Funcken...

i imagine that those 2 volumes in French should be quite interesting..as they are published by the French most important miniature modelling club..they said that each page is illustrated:

The flag of the 2nd Republic of France is Blue,Red and White rather that the Blue, White and Red of the current tricolour.

Those French books look very nice!

I have a German language version of the Funken at home but didnt recall seeing flags (and I'm away from home on business).

However the Spanish source has come up trumps - the flag in the second row on the left appears to be a 2nd republic French flag without LN Being named - his version follows on the right. I guess that the former would be correct for 48/49 with he latter following until his elevation to Emperor (bottom row).

Now I just need to find some in 28mm !

the plate you posted , taken from the Spanish site but if i remenber well without the original French captions, is from Funcken "les uniformes et les armes des soldats du XIX siècle" 1850-1890. deuxième Volume. which i own in my library and i've just open the pages with the captions. The flag n°2 (right top) is labelled from 1830 to 1848 (Sous Louis Philippe) and the n°3 (center left) 1848-1851 (Deuxième République)..the brass eagle on the top of the shaft of the 1830-1848 flag is not an eagle but a threatning cock

Strangely that plate is missing from my German language copy of the same book! But your translation confirms it's the style I am after. A friend has offered to help me out with a 28mm version so I looks like my French will be properly equipped.

Me too I m interested in the French Army of the period their uniforms being not very different from both Pontifical and French ones sported by the units that defended the Pope territories in 1867 which is my main topic of research and wargame minis collection from at least 30 years..
In case you did nt already know ..French painter Raffet made quite a few drawings of soldiers and places during the Siege of 1849:

For my demo game I intent to use Gringo40's excellent Garibaldi range. Although this is for the later conflict much of the uniforms are unchanged for '49.

The French will be Neapolitan figures, as the only difference I can see is the lack of gaiters.

The Republicans will be from the Picciotti and Redshirt ranges, with as much hat wearing troops as possible instead of the soft kepi. I have some bersaglieri too and a unit of Early ACW Union inf in frock coats and shakos to represent some Republican regulars.

One unit which I would like to add but am finding difficult to source are the Lancers of Masina. Wearing a braided jacket and a fez or shako, they need to be fairly big chunky figures to fit Gingo's, although they'll be the only cavalry present.
