Stupid question about basing.
« on: June 26, 2009, 10:06:03 AM »
Hi all,

could you please explain how to obtain that nice "standing" grass effect that I see in a lot of pictures?
On my bases is always beaten as if an elephant stomped on it. :(

I'm referring to 28mm miniatures.

Thank you!
Marco

PS I'm waiting for lots of jokes on "Standins" and "Viagra", but also some useful hint would be greatly appreciated! lol

The really good stuff is achieved by using grass tufts instead of loose flock.

Silfor seems to be the main brand. Antenociti stocks it in the UK. Not cheap for what it is compared to the loose stuff but worth it.
It comes in different lengths an colours.

If you are using loose flock try sticking it on with superglue and leaving the figure upside down a few minutes after application.

Yes the Silflor "buffalo grass" tufts are what I have seen used the most. Knoch (spelling?) is another company that makes the stuff I think. You can buy them through model railroad suppliers. I'm not sure how popular that is in Italia, but Knoch is a German company.

I can top that ;)

"Drop" some "glue" on the base, then put some normal "static" grass on it and immedatly give the "bush" a firm "blow" ... that helps with none errected "straws"... Tobi

If you're using loose static grass it can help to give the tub a good shake before use - with the lid ON of course!

D’oh! Should have read the whole sentence first!  lol

Seriously though that’s not a stupid question at all since I, and I suspect others too, have the same kind of problem when using "loose" static grass..  :?

Thank you! :)

I'm going to try in my next basing attempt.

Once in a exposition of railway models I saw an "electrostatic device", such a kind of hairdryier, which pourpose is to electrostatically charge the grass, in order to have it standing.
I suppose it could be useful if applied on large surfaces. :?
Not for 25mm round bases!

Personally I just use really strong PVA and turn the mini upside down for about thrity seconds, tapping on the base as though winding a tiny baby.  lol  Seems to work, although I have not studied the possible wilt ratio after it's been done.
