African Canadians at Dieppe?
« on: July 27, 2019, 12:38:16 AM »
Does anyone know if there were any Canadian African or black soldiers serving with any of the infantry regiments who took part in the Dieppe raid 1942? I can find very little on the web about minorities in the army at all during the war. I particularly interested in the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry and the Essex Scottish if that helps.

In general, it is quite possible that there were black soldiers in any Canadian regiment:

a five/ten min internet search turned these up.

But nothing about any serving in the Dieppe raid. Might have to ask the army or a historian. There are accounts of many serving in D-day and Italy. And many who went over to Korea in the PPLI.
Best of luck in your search.  :D

If you really want to know, you will have to find the names of the regiments and then look at regimental photos.

The British military (Canada being part of the Empire) did not discriminate on the basis of skin colour or ethnicity.

Each individual regiment would be comprised of those living in the area which it was founded/based and would then depend upon friendships and relations as to whom joined which regiment; some locals having more than one regiment.
