That looks fantastic.  Always one of my favourite books (which I foolishly loaned and never got back...).

Agree it looks good, this (Long Tan) was new to me so a 'quick google' about the engagement has got me really looking forward to it.

If it is as good as the book I will be very happy.
To those who haven't read the book.... get a copy, it is well worth the read.

The Lex MacCauley book was the original (excellent) book - published in the 1980s, I think.

Just saw this, I took the lad to see his first war movie. At least he enjoyed it.

I really wanted to like this film but came away very disappointed. Not with the button counting aspects, it’s a movie and you can’t expect all the details to be right. Actually, on that score, I thought the movie did fairly well, better than many.

What really fucking irked me was the absolute disservice it did to the blokes that fought there, in particular, the commanders. Lt Col Colin Jackson and Brigadier Jackson were just cardboard cutout villains. Harry Smith, a thoughtful and determined man came across as some sort of gung-ho loon. Apparently he physically assaulted one of the chaps killed in the battle and was butt stroked in return by same, said bloke during the battle. Later the screen version of Harry beats off a wave of Viet Cong using his service pistol. I know Harry Smith gave the film a thumbs up overall but I suspect that’s just gratitude for any feature film depicting the battle.

Morry Stanley, the Kiwi FO who was instrumental as saving D Coy comes across as a snivelling twit. He must be turning in his grave. Jack Kirby, the D Coy CSM who received a DCM for his role in the battle is barely a cameo.

Not sure which Australian Army the producers had in mind but it was clearly one where every bugger could do largely as they pleased, including whacking your OC with your bang-stick.

Then there was the classic Hollywood bullshit and invented scenes. It fucking amazed me that they felt the need, there were a host of real life dramas worthy of Hollywood that just got missed or glossed over for the sake of invented nonsense like nobly letting armed female VC stretcher bearers go.

The torrential rain that characterised the battle appears as a momentary sun shower and there are a host of errors and omissions regarding the way the battle actually fought out. Pointing out stuff like incorrect target indication and fire orders would just seem like pettifogging in light of the awful plotting and abysmal dialogue.

Disappointing but well I suppose thats Aussiewood. What saddens me is the impression people might form of some of the personalities involved.

Want to see something infinitely better done and just as gripping?

Watch this instead:

Oops, I meant Colin Townsend.

I suppose they cast Travis Fimmel to attract funding. It was a fucking poor choice. He thought he was still in Vikings.
