I have been experimenting with the Army Painter medium. It seems to help. I had had some frustrating time spent on wet blending the lower parts of the dress but I think it does look a bit better. It is getting there.

Good work sir! As Mirjeki says any progress is good progress (stares at part finished bocage/trees/desert terrain covering my wife’s beautiful antique oak rectory table)  :) glad someone is achieving something somewhere. Banshee looks better (it’s not you they’re deceptively beautiful models that whilst mainly simple surfaces are hard to paint well) Keep it up,

Rick I wish I had just a little of your hobby momentum  :). I think with the basing for the trees the tufts are too long, maybe trim them but I also agree that some fine turf (sponge) will probably work better. Getting the right mix or look is quite hard to do and unnatural arrangements stand out quite clearly (I’m currently really struggling with my Arid mat for Tunisia/Italy - what looks ok to my naked eye doesn’t match when photographed). That said looking at the woods my house is in now, if you made model trees and shrubbery in their current colours people would think they looked wrong or artificial.

Keep up the good work,
BALM

Thanks for the input mate. I always feel like I should be doing more. This hobby is fun but it takes so long to get things done.

Not much finished this weekend and no games but we did get some of the new Wargames Atlantic Giant Spiders delivered.

Pretty cool but fiddly to build. More information on my blog if you are curious.

I would be curious to hear what other folks think of these new spiders.

Brilliant Rick, the spiders are something I’ve followed since they were announced but haven’t yet bought (may have changed by the time you read this!) it’s a bit of a shame about the lack of symmetry in the space spiders (but I could allow some flexibility and think crab and asymmetric overdevelopment I suppose) although I want them as plain big arachnids so it won’t be a problem.
On the matter of your SP campaign I think a little steam punk would be OK just not the ‘main’ theme or driving force. A little bit of imaginative reasoning in an alternate setting should be fine..... What did you think of to add?

Keep up the good work,
BALM

I am still working out how to add large “monsters” to SP. So for example I am thinking of one campaign being a South America “Lost World” type campaign with GW Seraphon/Lizardmen as “ancient alien remnants“ with dinosaur pets locked in a thousands of years long struggle with giant spiders. The steampunk aspect is perhaps for example a construct built by a very short engineer to help in this titanic struggle.

My thought on the “Monsters” is to give each one the stats of a SP cavalry unit but with each fatality suffered by a cavalry unit being treated instead as a wound, ie treat a triceratops as a unit of impact cavalry with 8 hitpoints. Treat shock management and morale the same. Using an attached leader as a “handler”. So the same with the large steampunk construct with perhaps the engineer as a level 1 leader. Perhaps also use the Prominent Leader unit trait.

What I want to capture is a “science” versus “supernatural” narrative.

Part of my design thought is a Napoleonic “Star Trek Style” exploration adventure with various different locations and enemies. From Native Americans and Sasquatch to Germanic forests with angry “trees”. Mummies and Tuareg in the Sahara. Vampires and angry peasants in Eastern Europe. Djinn with Barbary Corsairs off the coast of North Africa. Oni and renegade Samurai in the Far East.

Think..... Napoleonic  French Johnny Quest.
